I remember doing all these things growing up, it was a wonderful time.  An imagination is a wonderful thing.  Recently I took one of my grand daughters and a grand son up to camp, she always found something to do and happy as a lark to be there but the boy was always bored -- no TV or computers at camp. We managed to keep him busy and at the end of the weekend he said he got to do things he'd never done before so it ended up being a pretty good weekend.

We would play tag, kickball, chinese jump rope, jacks, in the summer he would stop the drain holes in my dads pick up truck and swim in it,   red rover, we were never bored because we used our imaginations. We played for a long time in a tree that had fallen next to our house( it was a pirate ship, a fort, whatever we wanted) they finally cut it up. That was a sad day.

Wow, these posts bring back great memories for me as well, however, I grew up on a farm so romping through the woods, swimming in the river and playing in the barn were all great things to do.  We also took our rubber ball and threw it against the barn doors or house as hard as you could and it would bounce back so you could practice catching.  Occasionally, we broke a window.  I used to love to run out in the rain and jump in puddles.  We only got one TV channel so we really had to learn how to occupy ourselves.  I love to read anytime I have something worthwhile.  Great childhood!!

Playtime was at a premium.  After chores, we never ran out of things to do (bored was simply not a part of our vocabulary). Out of doors, we played hopscotch, jump rope, kick the can, hide and seek, cowboys and Indians and Tarzan and Jane. We loved to swing in trees, walk on stilts and walk on barrels.  We improvised our own little house out of boards and odds and ends where we made mud pies and "poison ink" from berries. We loved to catch butterflies during the day and fireflies at night (butterflies were freed before "supper" and fireflies before bed).  When it rained we took sheets and covered overturned rocking chairs on the porch to create a make believe camp.  Indoor entertainment was: pick-up-sticks, jackstones, paper dolls, card games and board games.  We made dolls out of socks and feed bags. All of us loved to read, which in those days meant a trip to the library, an awe inspiring wonderful place.  In fact, almost everything was a great adventure to us.  We could always find something that was fun to do.  It was a wonderful period of time for a child to grow up in.

Reading about all of the  the fun games, really took me back to the good all days of summer fun!  They were all free and parents didn't have to transport kids.  Simply go outside and play with neighbors!

We did all the games mentioned previously. Don't forget the old 45's. We'd set up a record player out on the porch and dance and sing to the old 45's. Don't forget the lightning bugs too. Always tried to catch the most and put them in your jar. Loved the old jump rope and coming up with new sayings to jump to, hop scotch, kickball, baseball, bike riding all over town, Red Rover, swimming, visiting grandparents and cousins, reading, playing cowboys and indians. For some dumb reason we loved using the croquet mallets as crutches. We used our imagination and were constantly busy. Parents never worried about us as long as we were somewhere around town and home for dinner. Loved playing school too. Wonderful, wonderful memories.

We were always outside playing games and romping through the woods and streams.  We played hopscotch, red light, tag, hide and go seek, jump rope, red rover and Mother may I. We also played softball, kickball, dodge ball and basketball.  We rode bikes and went on long walks.  We'd pick up glass drink bottles by the roadside and take them to the country store and sell them for candy and drinks.

We had so much to do,   we played jump rope, jacks, hop scotch, rode bikes, roller skating, simon says, red rover, hide and seek, played on swings, tether ball, ping pong, batmintin, croket, hoola hoops, tag, rode stick horses, went to the park swimming pool,  volly ball,  during raining days we played in the neighbors basement where we played cards, or board games or it was big enough we could ride bikes around in it.  I am sure there were more things we thought of to play but can't think of them now.   It was so much more fun then sitting in the house looking at a computer or tv games all day long.   Forgot that I had so much fun back then.   Back then we could play outside all day without our parents worring about us and as long as we got home before dark,  we were good.

We played dolls, hide and go seek, double dutch and road our bikes. We had to be yelled for to come home for dinner, or anythig else. We weren't allowed to stay inside in the summer.

Never had time to be bored. Played hopscotch, jacks, jumping rope, chase, races - foot and on skates, made up adventure games (some based on cowboy and jungle movies we has seen), basketball, catch. Also spent hours  swing and climbing on the swing set in the backyard. In the house or on the front porch in the summer time - paperdolls, board games, and reading.Annette

Chinese jump rope, Jacks, Kick the Can, Jumping Rope, a large assortment of board games, card games, riding bikes.  We and our friends would often climb up into the "treehouse" on our swingset, and have a picnic.  I also have a large Barbie collection from my childhood that we often played with.
