The best way to get an upgrade is to request one.  We got to one place that didn't have enough beds for all of us, and when we complained about the size of the beds versus the size of our group, they went out of their way to accomodate us and got us a two room suite with queen beds!  It pays to let them know how you feel, and to not get upset if they can't help you, but to go somewhere else where they can.

Frequent-buyer membership signups are generally free and often these alone will get you a hotel or rental car upgrade upon request.

I rent vehicles from Enterprise when we decide to take long roadtrips.  I've joined their Enterprise Plus Membership - which was absolutley FREE - and not only does it make reserving a car easier and faster but I get lots of coupons for free upgrades and special discounts.  When they mail out your membership card you get a free upgrade coupon.

When Flying...always ask to be bumped to first class...sometimes if there are seats available, they will let you move.  It has happened many times when I travel alone.  Good LUck!

I agree - ask.  If you're going somewhere for a special event - birthday, anniversary - be sure to mention that when making reservations and often they'll comp you an upgrade.  My BIL took my sister to NYC for her 40th birthday - they got stuck in Chicago due to weather. He called their hotel in Manhattan several times, "Please don't give our room away, we're still stuck in Chicago. It's my wife's 40th birthday and we're trying to have a special weekend away...this is a bummer!"  When they checked into the hotel, not only had they been upgraded to a suite but they'd been "bumped" to the conceirge floor as well.  The manager said, "Happy birthday - and we hope this makes up for the weather in Chicago."

Be vocal. If the room you were assigned isn't satisfactory'unclean, noisy or lacking the view you were promised'ask for an upgrade.

Most people like to help other people especially if they like you, and if you ask with a smile on your face, any upgrades available?  Your chances are good, if there are some available.   It is also good to check in with a manager if possible because they have more freedom to upgrade than someone who has just started in the position.

yes, but then I have to pay for it.  it is not usually the same rate.  how would you get a suite at a regular room rate?

But they don't let you move for free, right?  I always do this on Hawaiian Air, but you have to pay an extra $100 to be put there.... That is a huge discount, but it is not a free upgrade!

  • mY husband does this all the time and never pays extra.  he is polite and smiles and usually give a compliment.  if a seat is available he will get it. being nice pays. (also helps that he is cute and dressed well)

I agree with making sure you tell them if you didn't get what you requested.  And, the more friendly you are about it, the more friendly they will be!

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER complain! As a previous hotel General Manager - the sweeter you are, the more likely you are to get an upgrade. When checking in talk to the Front Desk as an equal...and if they're not busy you may just throw something out like...'Hey, we're here for 4 days, do you have any bigger rooms at the same price?' the better you treat people, the better they want to treat you.All those people that get upgrades by being rude need to watch out for the other things that may be done to them (i.e. internet not working in their room, wake up call not set correctly..)

remember that the person behind the desk has feelings too.  I send small boxes of sealed fancy chocolates with my husband to give to flight attendants, desk clerks, etc.  Just the act of giving someone a small token without expecting anything in return will reap you many rewards.

Yes, a smile, a thank you and/or a small gift can go a long way toward increasing you odds of an upgrade when dealing with people.  In this case, the Golden Rule rules.

I would not want my husband giving out chocolates to people he doesn't even know.  I would not want someone I don't know giving me any type of food item. It could be tampered with, and it would make me feel uncomfortable.

I would not want my husband giving strangers chocolate and I would not feel comfortable accepting candy or any other food items from people I don't know. I just think that would be weird.

I'm not sure if this tip qualifies as an upgrade, but I'll share anyway.  If you hate getting limp, old french frieswhen dining on fast food, ask for them without salt.  They have to make you a fresh batch, because they automatically salt the whole bin.

Wouldn't it be wonderful IF everyone treated people the way they wanted to be treated. I TRY this everyday. Please everyone who reads this try to do the same today & enjoy how happy you feel. Not for an upgrade, but just to have peace in your heart.By Melissa
