I know a lot of motels will bump you up to a better room or apply a discount if you mention you are a triple A card holder, and that you plan on booking more stays at their motel.

Purchase an entertainment book for the area you will be visiting for coupons or become a school alumni member. Even being a member of Farm Burea of AAA can reap many other benefits, such as free upgrades. Also, if you have any type of disability, you may be entitled to early boarding on a plane (chose your seat first) it may not get you into first class, but it will provide you with the portion of the plane you chose. Also, check the company website for any coupons or promotions and ask if they are having any free upgrade promotions when making your reservations....the secret is to be as nice and polite as you can be! Be smiling, personable and carry on a conversation!

Wonderful ideas that I havent really thought about - usually we just avoid hotels/motels because of the size of our family vs. the # of rooms we would usually need - too expensive.  But some of these ideas might help.
One way to obtain a great room for hotel rates is to price comparison. One such site is www.kayak.com They give a cost rating for many sites, but all in one place! Also, generally when entering a state's border at the first rest area or even at a local restaurant they have small printed coupon books full of hotel/motel coupons. Some of the hotels that normally cost over $100 per night can be rented for $30-$40!

I rent vehicles from Enterprise when we decide to take long roadtrips.  Ive joined their Enterprise Plus Membership - which was absolutley FREE - and not only does it make reserving a car easier and faster but I get lots of coupons for free upgrades and special discounts.  When they mail out your membership card you get a free upgrade coupon.
This is true, but if you don't have one available, it may pay to check a bidding site, such as E-Bay or U-Bid. Many people actually sell their extra upgrade coupons for a cheap price on these sites! It may be worth checking out!

ALWAYS ask for free upgrades, sometimes they do not post any incentives, and/or unless you ask you will never know.  That happened to us while on vacation, we just happened to ask and low and behold they upgraded our room with an excellent view.  And yes at the same rates.

I usually just ask and hope for the best.  Doesn't always work but sometimes we get lucky.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER complain! As a previous hotel General Manager - the sweeter you are, the more likely you are to get an upgrade. When checking in talk to the Front Desk as an equal...and if theyre not busy you may just throw something out like...Hey, were here for 4 days, do you have any bigger rooms at the same price? the better you treat people, the better they want to treat you.All those people that get upgrades by being rude need to watch out for the other things that may be done to them (i.e. internet not working in their room, wake up call not set correctly..)

ouch....but true....sometimes being vocal about complaints doesnt pay off

I agree that you need to be friendly, polite and also ask.  I always say, I'm wondering if you might be able to help me.  I never ever demand.  I recently made reservations at a Hyatt and used that approach.  The customer service rep was very receptive and arranged for us to have restaurant breakfast vouchers for each morning of our stay.  This is no small perk, as meals in this restaurant are quite pricey.

Sometimes being nice and patient will do the trick. We waited 15 minutes to check into Crowne Plaza this weekend and the receptionist looked exhausted by the time we reached the line. I simply said that I would wait if she would just like a moment to get a sip of water. She smiled and said that it was the nicest offered she gotten all day. We ended up with an upgrade and free breakfast for 2 the next day! So, be nice, smile and remember no one likes a line... no matter which side of the line you are on!

When you ask for an upgrade or need to complain about the accomodations you currently have, smile and be nice!

This attitude goes a looong way! Some people would be surprised if they just experimented and treated others this way. The response is surprising but also makes you feel good by knowing you have gone beyond someone elses expectation. When I'm having a bad day, by forcing a courteous attitude I sometimes come away not feeling as bad or better. I work in retail and believe me when I say if a customer comes to me for help, it is so much easier to do so even when they are disappointed to really go out of your way to help them if they are courteous. Now thats an upgrade.

Doesn't hurt to ask if they are running any specials that you may not have known about

The KASHI bars are awesome and 3 grams of fat with 10% of your daily fiber.    I will buy one of each flavor.     I also want to comment that they are very filling too.     Keep up the good work with your TLC!Sue

yes, but then I have to pay for it.  it is not usually the same rate.  how would you get a suite at a regular room rate?
  • We stay at a hotel frequently because my son sees a specialist in another state. When we make reservations I ask for the same room. This last time "our" room was not available, they gave us a deluxe room, and it was even better! We didn't pay more.

I'm not sure if this tip qualifies as an upgrade, but I'll share anyway.  If you hate getting limp, old french frieswhen dining on fast food, ask for them without salt.  They have to make you a fresh batch, because they automatically salt the whole bin.

remember that the person behind the desk has feelings too.  I send small boxes of sealed fancy chocolates with my husband to give to flight attendants, desk clerks, etc.  Just the act of giving someone a small token without expecting anything in return will reap you many rewards.

Yes, a smile, a thank you and/or a small gift can go a long way toward increasing you odds of an upgrade when dealing with people.  In this case, the Golden Rule rules.

I would not want my husband giving strangers chocolate and I would not feel comfortable accepting candy or any other food items from people I don't know. I just think that would be weird.

I would not want my husband giving out chocolates to people he doesn't even know.  I would not want someone I don't know giving me any type of food item. It could be tampered with, and it would make me feel uncomfortable.
