When to Break the Beauty “Rules”

Whether you got them from your mom, your grandmother, your friends, magazines, or a combination of all of the above, we tend to have certain ideas in our head about what’s right and what’s wrong when it comes to beauty. Do you faithfully stick to these “rules”?

Always Wear Deodorant
Break it…if you’re having a mammogram.
Skip deodorant until after the screening. The aluminum in deodorant causes shadows on mammogram film and can botch the results. So try to endure one morning feeling a little less fresh. Super-self-conscious? You might check with your doctor to see whether an all-natural (aluminum-free) kind of deodorant might be okay for the day. Schedule the test first thing in the morning. Or check to see whether a digital test is available (no film).

Save Blue Eye Shadow for Halloween
Break it…if you know to apply it subtly.
The ’80s gave blue shadow a bad name. But we’ve seen some gorgeous blues lately. Pros say it’s all in the technique: If you have paler skin, pick a sheer shadow; darker skin types can go a bit deeper. Whatever you choose, stick with one blue—mixing shades gets tacky. Brush on shadow at the lash line, then fade color slightly upward toward the crease. Keep the rest of your makeup soft. (Now’s not the time to try a new fuchsia lipstick.)

Don’t Use Conditioner If You Have Oily Hair
Break it…every time you shampoo.
In most cases, even if it’s oily near your scalp, the ends of your hair are dry. So it’s smart to give them some moisture and protection from the hair dryer, curling iron, straight iron, whatever tools you might use. Here’s the trick: If your hair’s super-oily, apply conditioner to your hair only at the ends. That’ll give you healthy hair without making it slick where the oil tends to build up.

Foundation Is for Your Whole Face
Break it…if you can get away with spot treatment.
Do you really need allover foundation? Try blending your foundation in an upward direction with a cosmetic sponge just over any red, splotchy, or otherwise problem areas. This looks way more natural—and could even save you money. If you still need a little more coverage, try a light bronzer all over and foundation just in spots where you need it most.

Gloss Is Just for the Lips
Break it…if you want to try a new trend.
Envy that dewy look you see on models right now? It’s actually supereasy to get. Blend your usual eye shadow or blush with a tiny amount of petroleum jelly on your finger and apply. Or, even simpler, just play around with your favorite lip gloss.

Have you tried something that was totally different and outrageous for you, but looked great? What rules do you keep or break? Be daring, share!

I at times mix my cleanser and scrub together and save time with the two step process.

Fruit of the Earth has this awesome Vitamin E lotion that is very light. I swear by it as my moisturizer. I put it on before my foundation and then use a cream foundation on my trouble spots and blend it out, then a powder to set it, to get rid of any shine. I used this when I was living in Florida and it worked great. I have combination skin so the lotion was light enough not to cause problems in my oily areas. Also, I have brown eyes and have always worn blue eyeshadow. It truly is a matter of how you wear it. It does make a great summer color though. Keep it light for day time and simple.Wink

I moved to the Deep South a few years ago and have "combination skin". Does anyone have any tips for wearing foundation in a place that usually has high temps and humidity? I've had to quit wearing it because it seems to just melt off my face. I've tried blotting the parts of my face that get oily, but it not only removes the oil, but the makeup as well! Any suggestions?

I used to sell Mary Kay and when we'd go to meetings, we'd get various tips.  Once we were  told to keep our summer fragrances in the fridge.  It makes the scent last longer in the  summer heat and it feels refreshing. Wahing your hair with beer and eggs really give it shine.  You just have to rinse really well.  Wash regularly, then do the egg wash and beer rinse.  Then, rinse in cool water.  You won't believe the shine and managability.  I also have oily skin and am prone to some breakouts, so exfoliation is a good thing.  Since the over the counter scrubs are expensive and too harsh, I make my own.  I mix baking soda (maybe 2 tsp.) and a few drops of water into a paste and gently scrub once a week.  It really makes a difference!  And, it's cheap. :-)

This is fantastic!  There are so many great tips to try!  Thanks a bunch!  I have a tip to share as well, although the dreadful years of teenage/early twenties acne are long gone...there is still the ocassional "can't come at a worse time" blemish to deal with!  My secret: Soak the end of a Q-tip in Visine & saturate the blemish...It's Amazing!!!  The Visine will take "the red out" of a blemish, the same way it does your eyes!  Although it works wonders, it only lasts a few hours before the red starts to come back...so be sure to toss some Q-tips & Visine in your purse for touch-ups!

THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS.  A LONG TIME AGO A MARY K LADY TOLD ME TO KEEP THAT EXTRA EMOLIENT NIGHT CREAM IN THE FREEZER, THAT IT WOULD EXTEND THE LIFE OF IT.  ALSO SHE TOLD ME TO FREEZE MY EYE AND LIP PENCILS BEFORE I SHARPENED THEM, THE IT DON'T TAKE SO MUCH OFF.   THANKS FOR THE OILY HAIR TIPS, I CAN'T WAIT TO WASH MY HAIR IN DAWN,EVERY DAY I GET UP LOOKING LIKE I HAVE POURED OIL OVER MY HEAD.

By Kim on 6/13/2009 4:22:18 AM

Yep, I add about 1/3 moisturizer to 2/3 foundation. It is great for the dry Arizona air and makes your foundation go a lot further! Also, a good way to make bright eyeshadows look more modern is to use a real heavy cat eye black liner to seperate the bright color from your eyes. Great with bright pink and green eyes!

By Sunny on 6/12/2009 11:23:42 PM

I ADD MOISTURIZER TO MY FOUNDATION, IT SEEMS TO GO ON BETTER AND LOOKS VERY NATURAL, I PUT MY EYE CREAM ON AFTER ALL MY MAKEUP IS DONE AND MY EYES LOOK MUCH BETTER AS WELL.....IN THE SUMMER I BUY THE DARKEST FOUNDATION AND PUT A FEW DROPS INTO A CONTAINER ALONG WITH MY WINTER FOUNDATION I HAVE LEFT OVER, THIS WAY I ILLIMATE THE COST OF BUYING EXTRA FOUNDATIONS AND MINE IS QUITE EXPENSIVE THE DARKER SHADE CAN BE OF ANY KIND, SINCE U ARE ONLY USING A FEW DROPS AT A TIME,,,,TRY THUS

By ZERENA on 6/12/2009 11:25:03 AM

I MIX MY FOUNDATION LIQUID OR POWDER WITH A MOISTURIZER FOR  A REAL NICE GLOW ON MY FACE IT BLENDS MUCH BETTER AND LOOKS MORE NATURAL, WHEN I AM TAN I BUY THE DARKEST FOUNDATION AND MIX IT IN A SMALL CONTAINER WITH MY WINTER FOUNDATION AND AGAIN I USE A MOISTURIZER INTO THIS MIXTURE TO MAKE IT MORE NATURAL........BUT FIRST I DO PUT ON A MOISTURIZER ON MY FFACE AND I WAIT ABOUT 15 MINUTES BEFORE I DO THE FOUNDATION,,,TO GET MORE OUT OF YOUR EYE CREAM, AFTER MY MAKEUP IS ON, I DAB IT NEAR MY CROWS FEET AND THE CORNERS OF THE EYES IT WORKS BETTER THIS WAY AND THE LINES SEEM TO DISSAPEAR, I WAS DOING THIS FIRST WITH MY MOISTURIZER, BUT MY EYES AFTER THE FOUNDATION LOOKED THE SAME, SO NOW AFTER ALL IS DONE I USE THE EYE CREAM.......................................TRY IT

I have thin and sparse eyebrows - So I use an inexpensive brown eye shaodw and fill them in with a stiff shadow brush (one usually used for the crease of the eye).  It looks natural and stays in place all day! You would not believe what a difference it makse to your face! Try it on one eye only and look in the mirror - You will never go without it!  If in a hurry - just put on Moisturizer, Foundation, Blush and fill in your BROWS, that will be all you need!!!! Thanks for the tips everyone :0)

I love the gloss/vaseline tip and will try it soon!I have blue eyes and I've always worn blue eye shadow.  My daughter has grayish/green and wears purple.  She blends her make-up so well that people have asked her if she were a professional make-up artist. Thanks for the epsom salts/baby oil tip.  I'll try that, too!

I love light blue eye shadow, but I use a very sheer mineral type.  It isn't heavy and is just a touch of color.  I never would have thought to NOT wear foundation on my entire face.  Wow, learn something new every day!  LOL

Several wrote about using petroleum jelly to soften and moisturize hands and feet. If your toenails don't look so good, you can use Vicks Vapor Rub on them morning and night, trimming back the toenails until healthy pink nail appears---about 6-9 months after starting the applications.

By Mary on 6/5/2009 11:09:27 PM

When I was younger I didn't care for the regular eyeliners so I came up with a way to line my eyes that i liked & got many compliments on. I took my dark blue shadow & added just a drop of water. Then I would loosen the shadow with the end of a very small lip liner brush. Then on th smallest, thinnest brush I had & put that on my eyes in a very small line. It would dry & then it stayed in place even when I swam.Rhonda from Louisiana

I don't trust deodorants because our skin needs to breathe, but an antiperspirant sometimes is a must.  What is better is washing with a washcloth and water.  Some people are hairy and need to shave.  Many people are sensitive to scents.  I belive cleanliness is best for everyone and you don't need to spend a fortune with water and a washcloth.

By Alicia on 6/5/2009 2:23:04 AM

I love the advice, and will also pass along to my daughter.

By Monica on 6/4/2009 10:26:25 AM

I've started wearing Physican's Formula's Organic Wear for Blue Eyes--it's two shades of blue and it's really great.   I use pale pink for the blush and lip gloss.  I love wearing blue eyeshadow again!  I will not put vaseline on my face--not great for adult acne.

I use the petroleum jelly on the feet at night and wear a pair of socks.  They are noticeably softer in the morning when I wake up.

Okay...don't know where the info not to wear fuschia lipstick came from.  This is NEW AND HOT! So is red.  Wear it.  However the tip for the blue eyeshadow...yep sounds good to me.  If the 80's gave it a bad name, what happened to the girls of the 70's who "Tussy Blue" was their fav.  Oh my...just leave it alone at any case...I wear navy in the creases, but not light blue.

Using olive oil and salt is a great way to remove dead skin from hands in the sink!!

By Melody on 6/3/2009 9:36:56 AM

I have two kids so I don't have time to fuss with a lot of makeup in the morning. I apply a light bronzer and then a little blush to my cheeks and to my eye lids too. It helps brighten my face a little and I don't have to mess with a lot of steps. I always use eye liner and mascara though! Forget about the 5 minute face I'm done in two.

By JENN on 6/3/2009 8:36:53 AM

I too have oily hair and I have found if I wash my hair with DAWN dish detergent {without the hand moisturizeronce} once a week I have no oily hair, better hair days and less chemical build up. Only dawn works I have tried them all. When I was a teenager I had to use it 3 times a week.

By Jame on 6/3/2009 6:42:17 AM

For a great body scrub I use baby oil and epsom salts mixed together.  I makes my skin feel so soft.  It is very inexpensive and works great.

By Latrelle on 6/3/2009 12:39:43 AM

For wonderfully soft skin mix baby oil with epson salts and use as a scrub all over.  You'll be amazed how soft your skin will feel.

By Latrelle on 6/3/2009 12:34:59 AM

I travel alittle and it gets your skin very unruly!  I either used to always breakout like crazy (and no, I am definitely not a teenager!) or my skin, lips and hands would get so dry!  A friend suggested Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream to me and the Satin Lips and I LOVE it!  I never have any more problems!  You can not buy in a store, but if you go to Marykay.com, they can refer you to a consultant near you!  You have also got to try their mineral powders!  Hope it helps.

By Norma on 6/2/2009 11:49:52 PM

If you have really dry lips, hands and feet. Moisturize with petroleum at nights.  Feet -combine with a little water put on a pair of white socks twice a week in the cold weather and use a pumice stone 3 times a week to keep feet soft. For hands add a little petroleum at nights and massage into hands and elbows nightly...not too much to be greasy. You'll feel te difference in 1 week.                                                                         Andres

One of my favorite money saving tips is to use up cleanser that I'm not too crazy about by mixing a bit of baking soda with it in my hand. It makes a nice facial smoothing scrub.

I LIKE TO PUT A DROP OF LIGHT SELF TANNER IN MY NIGHTLY FACE AND NECK MOISTERIZER. AND IN MY BODY LOTION AFTER A SHOWER...I LIKE THE LIP GLOSS AND EYE SHADOW IDEA AND THE WHITE EYELINER..GONNA TRY. I'M 69 SO I HAVE TO GO EASY ON THE MAKEUP...ALTHOUGH, TODAYS MAKEUP IDEAS LOOK MORE NATURAL. YES I COLOR MY HAIR..CAN'T SEEM TO LIVE WITH THE GREY...ITS A 28 WASHES TYPE...I FEEL TOO YOUNG FOR THE GREY...NO GRACEFUL INTO OLD AGE FOR ME I GUESS

By ARLENE on 6/2/2009 11:05:12 PM

You have to be very careful when you use baking soda for deorant.  Combining with one body chemicals will sometimes turn the baking soda red and it will come off on your clothes.  I would try it just to be safe.Smile

By Karon on 6/2/2009 10:49:21 PM

My little make-up trick, when using the new blues, is to add white liner (my fav is MAC) to he inside corner of my eyes. This adds just enough brightness to keep it "summer light"

By Jaclyn on 6/2/2009 10:30:28 PM

I forgot to add I use Crystal Deodorant and have for 11 years and love it.......

By Victoria on 6/2/2009 9:44:12 PM

Best to use hair conditioner on the ends only if you have oily hair.  I have dry chemical hair I do put all over my head....on the top of my hair I only apply a tiny amount.....actually I use what is left from the ends to put on the top of my hair.

By Victoria on 6/2/2009 9:43:25 PM

I have very oily hair and the no conditional except the ends is so true.  If I put it all over, I'm doomed to look like I slept with  my head in a bucket of oil within 24 hours.

By Denise on 6/2/2009 9:16:02 PM

If you can't wear deoderant you can use baking soda and it will keep the odor away. Ask your doctor or dermatologist they suggest the use to people who can't wear deoderant due to skin problems or constantly having a reoccurance of boils under the arm.

When I notice my eye brows are getting a little unruley and I'm in a hurry, I spray a little hair spray on my finger and run it along my eye brows. It helps keep them from sticking out and looking weird.

I like the tip about lip gloss. I have recently moved from the east coast to Wyoming where the air is dry, dry, and really dry. It's taken a toll on my lips and skin. I keep lip gloss in my car and when I get in I automatically put it on. Next time I get in the car I'm going to put a little bit on my cheeks also and see how that looks. Thanks for the great tip!
