7 Things Guaranteed to Make You Smile

7 Things Guaranteed to Make You Smile

It’s no surprise that researchers have found that other people will think you’re more attractive if you smile. But did you know that grinning can also boost your mood, ease pain, and help you feel less stressed—even if you fake the smile? Plus, it can make other people around you smile, and it may even earn you a promotion. (People who smile seem more confident and positive, making them more likely to be successful at work.) Here are some easy and inexpensive ways to summon your beautiful smile.

A Smile Makeover

Researchers found that people with more tooth and gum problems showed less of their smile when watching a comedy show. Even if you’re a very busy mom, taking time to care for your teeth—brushing and flossing daily, getting twice-yearly checkups, and trying whitening treatments and toothpastes—can help you feel more confident about flashing a smile.

A Girl’s Night of Pampering

Call a few friends, and break out the nail polish, cucumber masks, and a bottle of wine. We all need time for catching up and treating ourselves like royalty once in a while. For the perfect manicure, treat your hands to a slathering of shea butter, hand balm, or thick face cream. Then file your nails in one direction (not back and forth) with a soft emery board. The best shape to keep them strong: square with slightly rounded edges.

A Bouquet of Flowers

Buy yourself a bouquet and set them by your bedside. In one study, women who did this got a mood boost that lasted all day long. In general, the long-lasting cut flowers are alstroemerias, carnations, chrysanthemums, and lilies.

A Funny Greeting Card

Visit your favorite supermarket or discount chain store. Go to the coffee bar and get yourself a steaming mug of something, then steer your cart toward the cards. Stick to the humorous section, stocking up on birthday cards, thank-yous, and other funny messages.

An Old Photo Album

Toddlers with birthday cake in their hair. Old wedding photos with “dated” bridesmaids’ dresses that were so perfect back then. Grandpa’s old childhood photos with him in a bow tie. It’s all good for lots of smiles, whether you view them alone or with your whole family. To share albums across the miles, try kincafe.com—a site all about sharing with family, from photos and recipes to blogs and calendars.

A Silly Sitcom

There’s a reason that Cheers lasted over a decade. It made us smile. If today’s TV lineup doesn’t have you laughing like the good old shows, buy or rent something from the “TV on DVD” aisle at your local video rental store or discount chain. Or surf for reruns. They’re bound to be on somewhere.

A New Shade of Lipstick

Makeup expert Bobbi Brown says that dark, dramatic shades are fine for women in their 20s, but if your lips have started thinning out (which naturally happens as we age), a soft, vibrant tone such as rose, apricot, or berry will help your pout look fuller and more youthful. A bit of clear gloss in the center of your lower lip will also reflect light, adding to the age-erasing effect.

I've never done it, but many times I've thought about buying myself some flowers.  I just keep thinking of whatever meat, or other food item, that I could buy instead......especially since I'm not a "breadwinner" in our family.  It's so hard for women sometimes to just treat themselves, but I think if we do it more, we're happier and more able to be in better spirits to take care of our families.

If I didn't buy myself flowers once in a while I would never get them. It is  just somthing that does make me smile. Also my husband just isn't a gift buyer.  Watching my children play is also a mood booster! It lets me know they are doing alright and I somehow I am doing a good job with them so far.

My best friend owns a flower shop, she is always bringing over a flower arrangement or will send me one to work, no matter how your day at the office / home is flowers always make it better.. and the greatest mood booster for me is hearing my grand children laugh. How can you not laugh with them even if there is nothing really funny... Cool

Buying myself flowers would be a first!  But I think it would definitely make me smile...great idea!  I also love experimenting with new make up application techniques and colors that I read about.  It's just a little something that can make you feel alot better about yourself.  Try it sometime when you're feeling blue.

The best way to make yourself feel better is to do something nice for someone else. I know it's hard to stop thinking about how bad you feel, but if you start thinking about the other person while you're making the preparations for the other person, it works like magic. You start feeling better.  It works even better if you're able to do it anonymously, because then the good is passed on and the receiver passes on the "niceness", too. And, to think. You started it all.  Amazing!!!

It's important that you do something nice just for you sometimes; otherwise, you will get worn down and not feel like doing things for your family and others.

My new "hobby" is collecting coupons and saving big money at the store.  It's a great feeling to "spend" $200 and only "pay" $75.  That's what makes me smile!!!

This article was a great help!  It's always good to have input on new things to do to boost your mood.  I especially like the flowers by the bedside idea!

I too am a big fan of flowers and I think that it really makes a house a "Home" when there are fresh flowers. I like buying flowers and making my own arrangements.

I loved the tips. I am one of those people who are afraid to smile, but hey life is short and I have two beautiful children and that alone should make me smile more often.  I loved the flower idea I often see flowers at the grocery section but I thought it would be silly to buy them for myself but now the idea does not seem so silly. Thanks

Animals are great mood boosters. If you don't have any, offer to walk your neighbors dog.It will be good for all of you,and costs nothing, but time.....Another way to pamper yourself is a simple bubblebath.Light some candles, put on your favorite tunes. No cost, big rewards, thats my philosophy in these hard economic timesWink.

Buying myself flowers or cutting some from outside always cheers me up. I also like to get out the photo albums when I need a lift. Looking for a job and going on interviews, shakes my confidence. It helps to look at past accomplishments, vacations, happy times. Sometimes I take out old cards that were given to me - birthday, mothers day, thank-you cards, it reminds me that somebody thinks I', worthwhile. Recently a secret pal has been sending me cards of encouragement. It's fun to think about who it could be. It makes me want to pick someone out to start sending positive messages to. When you do things to make someone else smile, it makes you smile too.

Just hearing my 9 year old laugh while he plays with his new puppy makes me realize that all the little problems I dwell on day in and day out just don't seem to matter as much! It also makes me extemely happy when my husband and son sit on his recliner at night and watch tv. I am indeed one lucky mommy!!Kiss

I definitely need my book club.  It is so good to have adult conversation.  I've always been a laugher...I have friends that love to go to the movies with me because I laugh so loud, they laugh double, once as the film and once at me.
