Lost in the Hallway at School?

Over 4,000 Vocalpoint moms took the Partnership for a Drug-Free America's survey last month and revealed that their number-one concern about going back-to-school when they were teens was "not being able to find my classes and getting lost in the hallways" (41 percent). Twenty-one percent of moms worried about "not having friends, not fitting in and not getting invited to parties."

Remember how stressful back-to-school time was for you? The same holds true for your children today. As kids enter teendom, they face crucial transitions like reaching puberty, starting middle school or high school- and for some, even moving to a new town.

These transitions are key because this is when teens are most susceptible to starting drugs or alcohol. A 2007 Partnership study of 6,500 teens also indicated that the number one reason teens use drugs is to cope with school stress. But don't worry - while change is a part of life, risky behavior, like drug and alcohol use, doesn't have to be. As a parent, there is a lot you can do to help make tough transition times smoother and less stressful for kids.

That is why the Partnership launched Time To Talk®, a parent movement designed to help parents and caregivers start and maintain open, honest dialogue with their kids about the risks of drug and alcohol use.

TimeToTalk.org has comprehensive online tips and tools to help parents and caregivers make tough times smoother and less stressful for kids. The Partnership aims to help parents recognize these important times in their child's life. While also encouraging you to have better communication with your teens through free parent-friendly resources.

Visit TimeToTalk.org today to learn everything you need to know to help keep your child healthy, drug and alcohol-free, and even happy - especially during difficult teen transition periods.
