Crumb Crust, Anyone?

Category: Home
I love to cook and bake. But sometimes we end up with more baked goodies than my household can eat. Rather than waste brownies and cookies that are going stale, use your food processor to break them into crumbs and store them in the freezer. Next time you prepare a dessert recipe that calls for a "crumb crust" (such as cheesecake), use the crumbs you've stored in the freezer, instead of graham crackers or other store bought ingredients. You can also make crumbs from nuts using your food processor, and store them in the freezer, too. When you add broken up nutty crumbs to your crust recipe, you add nutritious proteins and omega-3's. The only problem is if someone asks you for the recipe... Your crumble crust may be a little different every time, but it will always be delicious!

I LOVE this! I cook a lot but most of the time it either ends up in the trash because it was more than we needed or we give it away.  The crumb idea is definitely a new direction to go.  Thanks!

A very economical and healthy way to use food with the nuts.  I think using left over baked goods is creative too.

Brenda, I read your suggestion for Crumb crust, great idea. I too, put leftover cookies, brownies and cake in the freezer after putting them through the blender or food processor (low speed). I store them in sandwich bags to be used for ice cream and yogurt toppings. When my granchildren come to visit I simply put the toppings in little bowls with teaspoons so they can choose their favorite toppings. They love color so I also put chocolate chips, and multi-colored sprinkles in bowls to add to the fun.

You can make nut flour by grinding nuts in a coffee grinder used only for nuts.  Then use them instead of graham crackers in crusts.

Love this idea for cookie crumb crust.  I already use the heels off of the bread (hubby and kids won't eat them) to make into bread crumbs (adding finely chopped nuts and flax for health benefits and flavor).  I'm thinking maybe I'll blend up the few shortbread cookies and some vanilla wafers with the little bit of peanuts we have and work a crust for a yogurt pie for dinner tonight!  Thanks for the inspiration

I always like to make desserts with peanut butter, oatmeal, and nuts.  It just seems a little healthier than just straight sugar.  Any great recipes to share?

I scrape the bottom of peanut butter jars and keep in the frig so when I want peanut butter brownies its always on hand. The kids never like whats at the bottom. So a big money saver for me. So start scrapeing lady's.

Mmmm thinking of all the wonderful things to make. I love adding processed nuts- almond, walnut and pecan are favorites to crusts and crumbles. Adds another level of flavor and good nutrients to our treats!

Great idea! I've been doing this for decades, also makes interesting breading for fish, poultry and meats as well as stuffing and croquets. Cake and cookie crumbs are especialy good as a topping on fruit crisps and crumbles, cracker and bread crumbs are great on casseroles, rye breadcrumbs are very good to stuff beef roulade. Have fun...experiment!
