Toothy Tips and Tricks

Toothy Tips and Tricks

Sure, we all know brushing teeth twice a day and regular flossing are half the battle when it comes to great teeth and healthy gums. But, there’s more you can do in addition to those simple steps! Check it out.

Regularly replace your toothbrush. Don’t wait until you lose it or the bristles are frayed beyond good use! Your toothbrush should be replaced every 2-3 months to prevent too much bacteria buildup and to keep those bristles strong. If you have arthritis or a condition that prevents you from a firm and thorough brushing, consider investing in an electric toothbrush that will clean your teeth much more efficiently.

Eat teeth-healthy foods. Nuts, apples, celery, carrots, and sugarless gum can all help your teeth; they don’t stick, they aren’t full of sticky sugar, and they can clean your teeth as you eat them. Avoid the constant ingestion of sodas, red wines, black tea, and other dark, staining liquids, or brush your teeth immediately after consuming them; each of those drinks have staining power. The carbonation in sodas is also bad for your teeth; it increases acidity, promoting decay. Sticky candy is another food to avoid, as it can coat your teeth in sugar. Yick!

Get your vitamins! Calcium isn’t the only mineral that will help your teeth. Vitamin D is great for your teeth, helping strengthen them. B vitamins and vitamin C are critical for healthy gums, so stock up on citrus fruits, lentils, bananas, and beans. Magnesium and zinc are helpful for strong teeth and bones as well.

Clean your tongue, too. Do brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth, but a tongue scraper is even better, as it does a much better job of getting rid of bacteria. Much of the bad-breath-causing bacteria can live on your tongue, so make sure you take good care of it every time you brush.

Don’t forget your gums! Make sure you run your toothbrush along the gum line, too, which help clear up excess plaque and promotes healthy gums.

Let your dentist know if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort with your teeth, whether that’s being over-sensitive to heat or cold, your mouth is dry, your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, or if anything feels different to you.

What are some of the ways you take extra steps to take care of your teeth? How do you help encourage good brushing habits in your kids?

My doctor ordered a blood test and I was a bit low on Vitamin D.  Many people are.   Vit D is not only good for strong teeth but also your bones especially as you get to become middle aged.  We just changed out our tooth brushes. Good little article.

I grew up in a dentist chair. I had very bad teeth. And in my older years, I chose to get dentures. I don't love the dentures, but it certainly has corrected the pain I experienced for so many years.

Excellent advice!  An unhealthy mouth and/or teeth can affect so many other parts of the body!  Number one in my opinion is the heart!  Healthy mouth makes healthy body!  Brush and floss and see your Dentist twice a year too!

Be careful using an electric toothbrush.  My dentist told me to only use mine every other day and only once that day because my gums were being harmed with its use.  I use my ordinary soft bristle brush on the alternate day and for the other time I brush my teeth when I use the electric brush.  I do love the extra clean feeling the electric brush gives my teeth though!

I keep telling people how great cheese is for teeth. I think it helps remove any sweet stuff still stuck on them after dinner. When I waited tables, an old lady told me about it when I asked why she always asked for a slice of American cheese melted over her apple pie. Is that true? I've always been told I have gorgeous teeth. I always say its because I used white strips and ate cheese if I couldn't find a toothbrush before bedtime. However, I just had my second root canal. Now my teeth are only gorgeous to people who love seeing a mouth filled with gold! Man! 40 hit my body hard! Melanoma and Vit D deficiency.. How's that supposed to work?!

I never really thought about the fact that I have arthritis and Fibromyalgia, I may not be getting as good of a brushing as I should be. My grip isn't very strong and I can't press too hard or it hurts. I'm thinking I need an electric toothbrush! I'm glad I read this because it never occured to me before this. Informative!

Vitamin D is good for the heart, too! When we were kids, my mother did not allow us to eat candy, drink soda or chew gum with sugar in it. I am truly grateful for that because I am blessed with healthy teeth and gums as a result. We were taught the importance of brushing and flossing, and it amazes me that so many people I meet do not think it is necessary. I met an attorney once time I swear looked like he never brushed a day in his life, and this guy was in court regularly. It is not only disgusting to see but bound to lower his professional standing because of his lack of proper hygiene. Tips like these are important reminders to do the simple things because they matter, so thanks again!

I suggest a waterpik! That thing is amazing for keeping your gums healthy.

Thanks for all of the information. I suggest that after drinking a dark beverage - tea, coffee, soda- RINSE your mouth immediately especially if you are going to brush right away. Otherwise, you are just brushing the darkness (for lack of a better term) into your teeth. Also, stay away from TARTAR based toothpaste, as it will cause your gums to recede or worsen if you already have that problem.

Good tips.  I'm surprised there isn't anything here about flossing every day, though.  I just love the GUM floss picks.
