Great date nights in

Great date nights in

You don't have to go out for Valentine's Day to make it a special event! Avoid the crowds in the restaurants and on the roads and try these ideas for a lovely evening in.

Wine tasting. Have a few bottles of wine sitting around, or a few half-full bottles? What about picking up a few five-or-six dollar bottles? Sample different types of wines with some cheese, crackers, and grapes! Do a bit of research beforehand (try here or here) and try to identify the complex flavors within your wine. Want to get the kids involved? Try a few different kinds of hot chocolate instead of wine. A few mugs of hot chocolate can be mixed with caramel sauce, mint, or even raspberry sauce for some different flavors. Pour some among a few glasses, and nibble marshmallows between sips.

Cook together. And not just your typical Tuesday night fare. Make something you’ve both wanted to try! Even if you splurge on a few special ingredients, it’ll still end up costing less than a typical Valentine’s dinner out.

Have a theme night. Going to make some pasta with your family's famous red sauce, or make a pizza from scratch? Rent an Italian movie together afterwards, and select an Italian wine to go with dinner. Trying your hand at a French dessert? Put on some French music and learn some French phrases together.

Play a video game together. Usually the kids have free rein with the video games, so challenge each other to a few games of bowling, tennis, or racing! Make sure you move anything out of the way that could be in the path of swinging arms or remotes.

Learn to dance! Aren't sure how to dance? Look up some video tutorials on YouTube and spend an hour or two getting the basics down for a dance like salsa, hip hop, the tango, ballroom dancing, or anything you like!

Plan out some volunteering together. Spend some time together looking at a site like idealist.org, where you and your significant other can find a local organization that could use some help. It’ll give you a great idea of the kinds of issues closest to your partner’s heart. Talk about the causes you care about! Set a date on the calendar in the near future to spread the love to places that really need it, and continue further bonding on your volunteer adventures. For more ideas, click here.

My favorite date is staying in with my husband with no kids.  He loves to cook a homemade meal for us and watch a movie together.  This way we save money and have quality time together too :)

I was disapointed with this article, besides the wine tasting everything else wasn't very creative. I love date nights in, I like to make a nice but quick clean up meal and then take a walk with my hubby.

We are trying to do different things each week as we are almost empty nesters.  Watching a movie or going out to dinner is our top choice.  We are thinking of taking dance lessons in the near future.

I like the idea of a theme night! My husband and I usually snuggle up to a movie for a date night in.

I am all for staying in on Valentine's Day night! All the restaurants on our city are so packed that the wait is 2-3 hours for a table. Instead, my husband brings home a meal already prepared, and I make a special dessert. Then we relax and enjoy the quiet, peaceful surroundings. There is much to be said for being in your own home!

We are going to have an indoor picnic in front of the fireplace this year.  I am planning on using my free pizza coupon from the local delivery place-- sending the kiddos upstairs with pizza and soda and then hubby and I will have our picnic.

We cook our Valentine meal together.  He gets to do sides and dessert while I do appetizer, salad, and entree.  He also makes cocktaila and he does a mystery drink that is red or pink.  We have done this for the past five years and it is a blast.  I search for a trivia contest that we answer while we are sipping the mystery drinks and my easy appetizer.  BTW....we have been married for forty years and some of our silly fun activities seem to maintain the "interest" in our "bonds" of matrimony.  All of you sexy lingerie, flowers and perfume, expensive night out couples, we envy you just a little, but that isn't for us anymore.

My husband has to work all day and late into the evening of Valentine's Day, so we will celebrate it over the weekend. We are at the point in our lives where the "kids" are sort of on their own (still live at home, but are busy with their friends), so we have quite a few date nights. Sometimes we rent a movie that we were not able to see in during its initial release.

I love to cook dinner and make dessert for my husband. We relax and watch a movie together. This how we enjoy Valentine's Day together.

Like these.  They seem a little "usual" though, other than the volunteering one.  We don't really celebrate "Valentine's Day", it's too commercialized.

I love the posted ideas.  I also like to go to little museums within an hours' drive.  Once a year, we try to hit a new-to-us B&B: we like those that include a murder mystery dinner or ghost hunt or dinner-cruise, too

I absolutely love your fun evening! It sounds so sweet! To be honest, I just got engaged this new year's eve and I kind of envy your valentines day!! You are where I hope to be one day!! ENJOY!

I think it is important to keep the spark in your relationship.   Plan things all year long not just one Valentines Day.

We never go out for Valentine's Day.  It all seems so fake.  We just like being together - no matter what.

Dating your husband? What's that? I haven't been on a date with him in 2 yrs. There is never enough time and our hours are complete opposite. I wouldn't reccommend not dating in any marriage because it does affect it.

We stay in every night due to hubby's work schedule and limited funds. If I have an opportunity to eat at a restaraunt I'm taking it!!! But in the meantime and I'm trying to think of something fun and romantic to do at home - just in case we can't go out. We do schedule dates but that always involves just fooling around. I want to do more than just that for a change!! :)
