Paper Beads!

Category: Home
Maybe you've seen them in a local boutique? Handmade necklaces from Uganda and Southeast Asia using a mix of shiny seed beads and paper beads! A catching trend, buying these necklaces is a way to support distant village industries and local small businesses at the same time. But you can also teach your kids how to make these at home! You'll need an old magazine or several sheets of paper, white glue, and a paint brush. Cut a page into really long triangle-ish strips. They don't have to be perfect, so it's okay if they're more trapezoidal (four sides) than triangular (three sides), but each strip should be long and narrow, tapering from one end to the other. Now dip a paint brush into some white glue, and spread glue down the entire length of the strip. Roll the strip like you might roll dinner crescents (the kind you buy in a tube and bake). If it helps, use a toothpick to start the rolling process, wind the strip around the toothpick, and then remove it. You've made one bead! Repeat to make more and let everything dry. Then, you can start stringing all your beads together. Easy!

I learned to do this as a kid using old Christmas cards instead of throwing them away. We also used wrapping paper I think...

Um, how do you get the hole in the bead? Or does it just end up with a hole because the paper doesn't get wound tight enough in the middle?

I purchased many of these as gifts for friends while in Uganda for the past 4 summers. It's nice to make your own, but mine can't compare to the beautiful pieces of jewelry made by the hardworking women there! :)

I hope this is okay to post. I found a link with pictures of how to cut the paper to get different shaped beads. I did this as a kid with magazines, and have done it more recently with lightweight patterned papers. washi paper makes gorgeous beads, and I usually put a water based laquer on them to make them nice & shiney. here's the link to the patterns: http://www.tappi.org/paperu/art_class/paperbeads.htm

I also saw theNat Geo article. I must say I have taught my grandchildren many different crafts.Since my arthritis has been getting bad in my wrists and hands, thjis proves to be a very easy process to enjoy with grandkids from age 2 thru 11. It has brought back enjoyable time we spend together and we continue to be able to create handmade gifts for family and friends.

Sounds like fun!  Could someone please tell me what side I should start rolling up first - the base of the triangle or the pointed top of the triangle?

That's exactly what my Girl Scout troop is going to work on next week. It is in our workbook as a project to reduce, reuse and recycle and it would help towards their jewelry badge. I hope it's as easy as it sounds as I haven't tried making one yet. What a great use for old magazines and gift wrap! Thanks for the great suggestion.

I made one of these for my mother about 25 years ago. It was a craft project shown on one of those morning shows that had a craft segment everyday. She still has it and reminds me every once and a while. This is a really easy and cheap project to do. Try all kinds of different paper to get different effects and just have fun.   p.s. I used round elastic to make a necklace.

In the third grade our teacher taught us how to make paper bead necklaces. I also think we need to support more American endeavors; we have lots of needy people here that sell their wares...just to keep in mind. But it's great to  help others too!

Oh yes,I've seen and heard of these. I,like this idea so much!!! This is great,as,I,buy numerous shapes, sizes, and colors of beads and sets of beads. My grandchildren and,I, like to make key chains, rings, ear rings,etc...we make them for others as well as ourselves. This is a wonderful way to spend,"Quality Time",as a family. I,will also let my daughter know so they can do this at parties, sleepovers,or just fun time!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! EXCELLENT TIP!!!

We made this in art class when I was in school. We used coffee stirrer straws to wrap the beads and once they were done we dipped them in varnish to seal them tight and make them shiny.

hey - I think I know what you're talking about.  like the necklaces on beadsforlife.org, or the National Geographic store.  a friend of mine was wearing one, but I've just seen them online so far.  I guess I should look around more!
