Crayons For Little Hands!

Category: Home
Young kids seem to create a pile of broken or nubby crayons, like it's their job. It has a lot to do with the shape and size of their crayons and their hands - they can' help breaking them! Save those broken crayon pieces and create your own for a fun coloring solution!! Start by peeling the paper from the crayons and breaking them into smaller pieces. Fill your muffin pan with foil cupcake wrappers and put a bunch of the pieces in each one. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes, then put your muffin pan in the oven -- and turn the oven OFF. Let it sit until the crayon bits have melted. Remove your pan from the oven and allow everything to cool. Pop the wax out of each wrapper, and you'll have a rainbow of round crayons that are perfect for little hands! Kids love'em - and adults do, too!

I worked as a toddler teacher and did this for my class.  They love using them.  But don't make the mistake I did.  I used a microwavable muffin bake dish and it got badly stained!

i do it all the times, often use the cookie cutter and since it does not have a bottom, line with the foil paper and you have different shapes of new mix and match crayons..my kids adore them and definately use them . I have also used them as a little gifts box for school projects, teachers love them too.

This is one of my favorite childhood memories with my mother in the kitchen.  We even had a special muffin pan dedicated to crayons only!  Now we pass the tradition down to our family and friends.  I make them as gifts for teachers, kids and parents alike! You can bake them in silicon bakeware for different shapes too.  Also Bakers Joy spray does a great job preventing them from sticking so you can save your cupcake liners...

We have done this before.  Kids love it!  You can also talk to your child about changes in states of matter.  The crayon is a solid, melts into a liquid, then goes back to a solid.  Great learning experience!

I did this when we hard a slumber party and the girls loved it. We used a  heart shaped pan and put them in little bags with a coloring book so they could take them home. I got so many thanks from all the parents that this was the easiest way for the girls to keep track of the crayons.

This is a great idea for my grandson when he gets a little bit bigger. Right now everything goes into his mouth. This is also a great idea for older or handicapped family members. Those thin crayons just do not hold up with the pressure some put on them while coloring. Older or handicapped family members sometimes do not have good hand and I control to hold the crayons in their hands. This is also a good idea for physical therapists with paitience recovering from a head injury or stroke to get their hands moving. I love it thanks so much for this great idea.

Great idea! We switched to twistable crayons because my 3 year old was always breaking the "regular" kind. But we still have a few boxes of them left. I also like to sharpen the crayons, placing the shavings on a piece of in foil on a cookie sheet. Then melting in the oven the same way as described above. makes really cool "art pieces".

I love recycling old and broken crayons, but will melting them in a muffin-disc shape be effective for coloring?  Or if the discs of melted crayon are thick enough they could be cut into sticks?  I know there is a fun crayon maker by Crayola that shapes the melted crayons into sticks again, but I'm sure it's not very cheap to buy.

This is great! With a 3 year old of my own and 3 grandchildren age 3 and under, we go through crayons like crazy. I can't wait to make these. The kids will love making them and I won't be buying so many crayons. Thanks for an awesome and extremely useful idea!!

I've been working with children for 50 years and this has always been a favorite thing to do on a rainy day.  We would do this in the morning and then color with the "new" crayons in the afternoon.

What a fun and neat Idea!!  Too bad my step son is 13 and not interested in coloring as much as he is in sports.

Wonderful ideas, use the mini muffin pans for smaller sizes.

To HIBA: You could probably use a toaster oven for this instead.

Really!! not trying to be negative here, but I wouldn't turn the oven on for that and waste electricity,I pay almost $350 a month and sometimes I wish I can cook a warm meal for my family but its to costy.

What a GREAT IDEA!!!! My daughter is 15, and sometimes we still sit down and color together, this is something we have done together since she was old enough to color.
