Drawer Stuck?

Category: Home
Ever have a dresser drawer, kitchen drawer, desk drawer, or other kind of drawer that's difficult to open? If the chest of drawers (whether stand-alone furniture or built-in cabinets) is made of wood and/or wood materials (like particle board, plywood, or MDF, medium density fiberboard), try waxing the wood to keep it from sticking. Pick up some furniture wax at the hardware store - it comes in a tin. Furniture wax is soft like beeswax, but firmer/harder than hair styling wax. Remove each drawer completely from the furniture or cabinets, and empty whats inside. Now dip/rub a lint-free cloth in the wax to get about one teaspoon or tablespoon on the cloth. Apply the wax to the top and bottom of each side of the drawer (just the thin edges, not the deep interior surface), and rub it liberally into the wood. Repeat as necessary. Then return the drawers to their rightful places. When it's done right, previously stubborn drawers will slide easily without even a squeak!

No need to buy anything:I have been using my  leftover pieces of bar soap for this very thing.. Simply flip the drawer or reach underneath it and run the bar of soap along the protruding drawer line!! Instant slide!!

I love that idea!! I heard using a bar of soap does it too! But I'm thinking that the wax would be a longer lasting solution.

There are some great ideas here...but here is my problem...the drawer is stuck.  How can I get it to move outward?

Brilliant idea; while I am doing this, I take advantage of cleaning the drawer throughly, updating the contact paper lining and donating and throwing away old stuff or clothes we've outgrown.  It's a good time to do these things since the weather isn't so pleasant outside anyway!

Thanks for the reminders to use candles, soap or wax.  I will definitely try this on my old bureau drawers that sometimes stick.

As some other members have said...a plain ol' wax candle works just as well and costs lots less than furniture wax!  I've used it to prevent drawers from sticking and on old window sashes, too.  I also use candles to keep my car doors and windows from freezing up and being hard, if not impossible to open.

I have an old wood dresser where the drawers are always sticking. I've used soap but I have to re-soap every few months. I'll definitely try wax. I have some candles laying around I could try. Thanks so much!

SHARON - This tip is for wooden drawers.  Because wood is flammable, I hope you don't have wooden drawers direclty below your stovetop.  Perhaps you should consult a certified contractor or someone specializing in household safety?

I'll have to try this.  Great suggestion.  Beats leaving the wood file cabinet drawers in my basement open because they swell up seasonally depending on weather.

What if the drawers are right under the burners on the stovetop.  What would be safe to use?

If you don't have formal "furniture wax", try using a candle!  That's what my Mom used to use and it worked like a charm.

An old taper candle will work too.  The wax from the candle serves the same purpose as the furniture wax and/or the paraffin mentioned above.

I still use beeswax. I buy it at the farmers' market along with local honey. It's cheap, and it lasts forever!

Before applying that wax to a stuck drawer, check the drawer slides. Sometimes they become detached causing the drawer to get stuck. I had that problem and when I fixed the slide track, the drawer moved freely. You may need to hammer in a nail, screw in a loose screw, glue it back in, or replace a broken slide. So check them out, your stuck drawer may need more than wax to solve the problem.

While you have the drawer out, check to see that all of the boards are securely fastened at the corners. Over-stuffing drawers can cause them to spread apart and this makes them hard to close. You can also use parrafin wax as an inexpensive alternative to furniture wax. Just rub the block on the edge of the drawer. You can find it where canning supplies are sold or at the craft store.
