Celebrate the Half-Birthday!

Category: Home
In our family we celebrate the Half Birthday - maybe you'd like to try it? On a child's Half Birthday, measure and mark their growth chart, give them one small gift, and let the half-birthday child choose the restaurant for a family dinner out. Nothing huge, just a day to let that child know how special they are! And if the day falls on a school-day, send them in with cupcakes half-decorated, or decorated with fractions on top - but only make one cupcake with the "1/2" fraction on it, for the half-birthday child! Have a very merry half-birthday, everyone!

My little brother started celebrating his half birthday only after he started school. His August birthday became a February birthday so he could do the cupcake thing with his classmates.

We start the party on the half-hour (10:30, 2:30, etc.). Half of a round cake. Half cups of milk or juice. Half of a birthday card...cut the entire card on a angle, corner-to-corner. Hot dogs cut in half. Children have great ideas for this, and love being involved in the planning and doing.

My family celebrates "unbirthdays". All of our birthdays are in the fall so we choose a lovely spring day (on a whim) and have an unbirthday party for all of us. I plan the event a few days in advance. We usually have cupcakes and ice cream and exchange small gifts like candy bars, hand colored pictures, sea shells, and the like. It is a great way to have some fun family time and create some memories on what would otherwise be an ordinary day.

My birthday is in February and it never had decent weather and it was during school.  We always celebrated my half birthday so we could really do something to celebrate and it was usually outside as we had to small of a home to party iside.  It started withe me being a child over half a century ago and it still continues to this day with fond memories of family long ago gone who took the time and effort to let me have a birthday party too.

I think this is a great idea. I'd probably leave off the gift, but I think it would be very special to my daughter to celebrate. My daughter's half birthday falls in June, while school is out, so maybe I'll have a few of her friends over for a sleepover. I'm sure she'll enjoy seeing her friends.

I started doing this for our son when he was in Kindergarten because his birthday is in July- when school was not in session. By the tiime he was in Fourth grade almost every summer birthday child was celebrating their half birthdays!

I did this for both my sons when they were six months old and every year after that (until they were in their teens and decided it was 'dorky').  I'd bake a cake in a 13 by 9 pan snd then cut it to make the numbers 1 & 2 and a slash for the fration sign...a real half-birthday cake.

This is such a cute idea!!  I have never thought of that.  And the growth chart is great, because I find myself forgetting to measure.

This is a great idea for December and early January birthdays as they can get lost in the holiday rush.  I have a December birthday and I've celebrated it like this for years.

My Family always celebrated half-birthdays, too! We usually had half of a cake, and sometimes recieved half of a present (one slipper, etc.) that would be completed on our birthday. It was a ton of fun!

In my family, we celebrate my Birthday which is on Christmas Day.  We also celebrate 2 Granddaughters birthdays, one who will be 11 on December 17 and a newborn this year on December 11.....so we have a lot to celebrate besides Christmas, which is Jesus' Birthday!
