Used Candles for New Candles!

Category: Home
To make new candles, first gather together the leftover wax from all your spent candles. You will need an empty coffee can (or any ordinary saucepan), a glass mason jar (high temperature glass used for canning), some new candle wicks (find them at the craft store), and some candle forms. To start, fill your can with 2 inches of water and place it over low to medium heat on your stovetop. The water should not boil, but it should be very warm/hot. Fill your glass jar with bits of candle wax, and place it in the center of the water. While the wax melts, prepare your candle forms (decorative glass jars, decorative tins, paper cups, empty cardboard milk carton, etc) by sitting them upright on your counter or table with something underneath - newspaper or a plastic table cloth will protect your table or counter from messy wax drips and splatters. Fill one of your forms with melted wax, and insert a new wick until it touches the bottom. Hold the wick in place just long enough for the wax to cool and harden for a minute. Cut the wick off at about 1/4 inch above the wax. Fill your next form, and repeat as necessary. For paper cups or cardboard forms, you can peel the form away once the wax is fully cooled and hardened. Then you can start enjoying your new (recycled wax) candles!

I do this on a regular basis. I save some of  the jars and just melt the leftovers and pour them in ! I have a new candle in no time and the scents change throughout the day.

This sounds fun.  Years and years ago one of the kids had a candlemaking kit that was a lot of fun if I remember correctly.  I now know what I'm going to do with some unused candles that got too hot and melted so they lean.  I like the crayon idea, too.

Peggy - The possibilty of a fire is a worry, but if you want to avoid it just use one of those electric melting pots made for wax. They're really good if you're doing dipped candles but you have to make sure that all the wax you put in is sutable for free-standing candles (None from jar candles). I'm not sure how well the pots pour though... it could be difficult to get the left over wax out without making a big mess.

Great idea but remember:  NEVER, NEVER, NEVER walk away from your stove while melting candles.  I know of a family whose house burned down while making candles.

I'll give this a try.... I love to learn little do it yourself tricks,  and ways to repurpose, and in this case reuse. Thankyou!

I had done this years ago too! Thanks for reminding me to do this again! Great idea for reusing/recyling those little bits of candles that would normally be thrown away :) Also, thanks for the idea of adding crayons also- I hadn't thought of that one!

It's an old, very good idea, fun too. Though when I recycle my candles I throw in any crayon bits of similar color when melting the wax. You need to stir it up well to make sure you don't end up with funky marbling. Some times I use just the crayons, the kids have a ton of fun breaking them to to into the pot. They also like it when I do layers, especially if I let them pick the colors. For different layers you need to let each color cool before adding the next. Here's a question, does anyone know how to do a deliberate marbling of two colors (and make it look good)?

I really like the idea of using the ice cube trays. we have a ton of used candles, this would help use them and I like to add just a bit of candle fragrance to renew scents. add before you pour into mold.

We take the leftover candle wax and melt it, pour into ice cube trays and pop into the freezer to harden.  No wicks needed.  Then we use them in tart burners to add fragrance was needed.Thank you Michele for sharing such a useful tip.
