What Men Want (But Won't Buy)

What Men Want (But Won't Buy)

The best gifts are the things you’d never buy for yourself but would still love to own—those niceties that are beyond either our budgets or at least our levels of self-indulgence. Men are no different from women in this respect. There are lots of things they want and even need but they won’t buy for themselves (or even tell you about). So the next time you want to surprise your man for a birthday (or a Friday!), pick one of these guaranteed guy-pleasers. Even though they may not make sense to you, guys tell us they’ll delight him.

Socks. What were you expecting we’d have on this list, a Lamborghini? Good, quality socks are something all men require (and desire) but don’t want to pay for. In fact, guys think socks should be free. So buy him some cashmere-blend dress styles or a few pair of incredibly high-tech athletic socks. Makes a great “no-reason” gift.

Utility fridge. Whether he uses it to store beer, venison, or the fish he catches, guys love an icebox they can put in the garage or basement and call their own. Don’t ask why, it’s just so. But this is a win-win. You don’t want his fishing worms next to your hummus. If you’ve been looking to upgrade, order a new side-by-side and have the delivery guys relocate the old one. Attach a big red bow. Or search sites like craigslist.org for cheap buys.

Anything grill. Cooking meat over fire appeals to something prehistoric in men. But even though your caveman may claim he’s content with his Smokey Joe, you can bet he’s yearning for the new, super-deluxe BlastFurnace 3000. Buy him one if you can afford it. If not, then some mesquite chips, a nice pair of tongs, or even a few fillets will do. Anything associated with the grill thrills. Bonus: He’ll do more cooking!

Extralarge tool chest.
We’re talking about those big red ones on wheels they sell at Sears—the Craftsman multidrawer models with ball bearings. It doesn’t matter if your man doesn’t own enough tools to fill one or if he even knows how to fix anything; this is a status symbol for guys—sort of like owning a 4x4 that never leaves pavement.

A pro ball. Pick your guy’s favorite sport and buy him the best pro-model baseball, football, basketball, or other piece of equipment that’s central to it. It doesn’t matter if he plays anymore, he’ll relish just sitting on the couch with it in his hands while watching the game. It’s a way to help him hold on to his dreams—literally.

“Get Out of Jail Free” card. Borrow one of these from the kids’ Monopoly set. (You can also buy a pack of extra cards for under $5 at hasbro.com or on eBay.) Give it to him in an elaborate envelope and tell him the next time he screws up something small, you’ll forgive him—no questions asked. Be sure to explain that you don’t mean this literally—you’re not planning to post bail.

My husband would never buy socks or underware for himself.  Every time he is at the store for pants I tell him to pick up socks and underware, but returns empty handed.

Was funny to read.  My husband complains about the price of socks and underwear.  So I buy them and just put them in his drawer.  He would also love to have the extra refrigerator to himself.  He will have to wait till the kids are gone though.  I remember him buying that large red tool chest before he had any tools.

My husband would love the tool chest. Also, thinking about getting him a personalized sports jersey for Christmas this year. :)

When I find nice wool socks on clerance at a place like target ..I get a couple packs ( for wool its usually 2 pairs a pack )  He is always happy to see them in there and thanks me . He love having some cofortable warm socks in the winter but would NEVER buy them for himself . I wonder why men are like that . Although there are several things I would LOVE to have but would never buy for myself . Thats the frugal mom in me I guess .

My guy likes socks with designs on them. I don't know why, I guess he likes having a little secret of knowing he is wearing Tweety Bird socks or Winnie the Pooh. He has a wondeful sense of humor, so I guess that explains it.

Even though my hubby is a carpenter/builder jack of all trades and has every power tool, wood tool and hand, tool, he doesn't have a BIG RED TOOLBOX. OMgosh, this is so cool. I can NEVER think of what to get him for xmas/bday other than hunting stuff that HE ALREADY has an abundance of!! I am getting this for him this xmas....I know he had one years ago, and our barn got robbed and he never replaced it. Thank you!

I Love the GET OUT OF JAIL FREE card idea.  I am always looking for different ideas from the 'normal' gift.

Be careful, Sonja - brands can be VERY important to tradesman.  I know because my husband wouldn't be caught dead wiith a particular brand of tool chest (or tools - he says they are junk in the long run).  Try to find a way to make sure it's one he wants - does he have those brands of tools and lots of them?  Maybe you could ask someone who works with him or find a way to explore his feelings on it before buying it.  Good luck!!  I think it's a great idea.

The only gift I ever bought my husband that he didn't complain about or return was a chainsaw.  I researched before I bought it so it wasn't a bad brand or anything... AND I got it on sale so he couldn't complain about the price!  Men are goofy sometimes Wink

Hilarious! I'm a single mom of teenage boys and believe or not they weren't forecoming on what they wanted from 'Santa' last Christmas so I warned them that they'd better think of something they 'wanted' or they just might get something they 'needed' like........get ready for it........socks and underwear! Needless to say, 'Santa' scavenged the clearance bins at Kohl's and they both got a box full of great socks and underwears.....hehe.....they loved it really and we NEVER have a loss of clean underwear.  And fear not, good Santa that I am, I came up with a few other things they didn't know they wanted!

I think this has been the very best article I've  because it has been so helpful in ideas for my hubby. It is true he wants socks but will never buy them for himself. My sons will never buy underwear either but use whatever I buy for them and they are in their twenties. Thanks for the ideas!

I am a single mom of two boys they just take for granted that they always have nice underwear and socks. Maybe that is why they don't like to buy them when they grow up. Embarassed

Why is it that men don't buy their own socks, underwear and other things? My hubby is the same! Is it because mommy always did it for them? I pick out all of my own things and it would be nice if they did it too!  Oh well, gotta love em'!!
