The 8-Hour Life Break

The 8-Hour Life Break

Day spas are great but who has the extra cash nowadays to afford them? That’s why we’re bringing the day spa to you with this 8-hour, at-home, do-it-yourself program designed to relax and recharge. Ready. Set. Ahhh.

Lay out a plan. If you have kids at home, drop them at the in-laws the night before or ask your hubby to take them on a day trip. Disconnect the phone, have someone hide the remote control and your mobile, put a piece of duct tape over the doorbell, and don’t even turn on your computer. Most important, disconnect every clock in the house or put tape over its face. You’re dropping out.

Give yourself a kur. When you wake up, head for the bathroom and dampen a hand towel with cool water. Spend a few minutes lightly wiping your arms, legs, and torso, then go back to bed. Your body will heat up, and you’ll fall into a deep, restful, dream sleep. A kur is standard treatment at European spas.

Flush away trouble. Find some small strips of flushable paper and write down the names of all the people or situations in your life that are stressing you out. Then throw them in the bowl and flush. You’ll feel instantly relieved.

Start with a smoothie. For a morning boost that doesn’t rely on caffeine, combine 1 cup nonfat milk, 2 tablespoons frozen orange juice concentrate, 1 cup strawberries, and 1 kiwifruit in a blender. The 210-calorie, low-fat result is high in protein that will fire up your body and brain.

Exercise. Walk, run, bicycle…it doesn’t matter what the specific activity is as long as you elevate your heart rate for at least 20 minutes. (Make sure you have your doctor’s okay to exercise.)

Eat again. Grazing is the healthiest way to eat. Divide your total daily calorie allowance among six smaller snacks rather than three big meals. This strategy keeps your energy levels constant and prevents binging. Have a small salad or half a turkey sandwich now.

Pamper yourself. Give yourself a facial (complete with cucumber slices). Then hop in the shower, shampoo, and spend a few minutes running your fingertips lightly across your scalp like a comb. The scalp holds a lot of your tension. Finally, treat yourself to a manicure or pedicure.

Nap. No explanation necessary.

Eat some more! Is this day great, or what?

Put beans in your slippers. For an indulgent foot massage, pour some uncooked beans into your slippers and walk around in them.

Reconnect. Spend the precious time you have left listening to an old album, rereading parts of a favorite book, looking at photos, or calling a friend/relative you’ve been neglecting. Then, just before your family (and life) returns, stretch, yawn, and say hello to your old self again.

You lost me at "do it yourself".  Ha ha ha.  I liked the idea of the listening to an old album, especially one that reminds me of days when I had less responsibilities.  I might suggest low prep foods (buy a nice salad or deli sandwich the day before and add some fruit and nuts throughout the day).  Even though I love to cook, I don't want to face a dirty kitchen on my "spa" day.

I like most but the bean one I'm not so sure about.  Seems like you'd feel like you were walking on pebbles or rocks.

It all sounds so heavenly I almost fell asleep just reading it. My very favorite is the flushing adventure, but I may have to use the entire roll.

I think the author was implying a do-it-yourself mani/pedi, like the other suggestions in the piece.Sounds very relaxing--if only life would give me 8 hours peace.

Can't wait to schedule a day to do something like this!  I have a ton of books a friend gave me that I've been dying to read!  After my nap and snack and nap again, of course!

This sounds wonderful...if only there was a single parent version.  Any suggestions for the kid when the hubby is now the ex-hubby and is not a "life-participant?"

I wouldn't mind an hour or two but a whole day home alone would drive me insane.  I would rather go out and do something even if it's taking a walk.  As for relaxing inesxpensively try a beauty school or esthetician program.  They''ll offer facials, body wraps ect and usually for less than half the price.  You get a great day and get to help a student hone their skills as well.

A group of us had this idea and ran with it last year when economic cercumstances started to stress us out. Thanks for th Kur and tioletpaper idea. Single moms... I made a deal with an equally stressed mother of my daughters best friend. She took them one Saturday, I took them two Saturdays later. Then I introduced the idea to my Ladies Auxillary group. Turned out coupled moms were just as stressed and willing to swap time with singles or attached women. Well that took off! Now there is also a list of women whose idea of relaxation needs a like-minded partner (like golf, tennis, hiking, day trips) - they meet to play for 2 or 3 hours or they spend the whole 8 hours together, depending.  We've added a list for "girly girls" who rather a shared experience. They give each other mani/pedis, facials and shampoo/condition/scalp massage treatments. They definately have the best grazing!! We encourage each other to do a SELF DAy about every 3 month. However you do it - DO IT!! WE are worth it.

I think these tips are a good reminder to take a breather to help reduce stress. That is something I forget often and should use!

8 hours by myself.  I had the husband take the kids to the zoo for a few hours just so that I could clean the house.  :P

I SO know what you mean, I never got a day to myself until my son was grown/gone.  He's 29 so I get alot of those days now and feel blessed because of it.  I was a single parent from the age of 22 until I was 41.  You'll get there, it just may take some time and creative planning :)

This is a great idea for sure. Thank you ! Oh and to reply to what Shawna said she's right you really can get good deals at beauty schools also if you keep a eye and ear out you can get the chance to have a service done for free.! I did a couple months ago a student needed 5 customers for color/cut/perm ect each and I ended up getting a perm free and she did great!
