How a Tennis Ball Can Help You Sleep Better

How a Tennis Ball Can Help You Sleep Better

In search of better sleep? Start by looking around your house. Some seemingly simple things you may already have on hand can help you sleep better and longer—and that translates to more energy all day. The best part: You can start using some of these surprising sleep aids tonight.

Hand Towel
The light from your alarm clock can be strong enough to beam through your eyelids, tricking your brain into thinking it should still be awake. Tossing a hand towel over the clock face brings back the night.

Tennis Ball
If you have a snoring spouse, sew a “pocket” in the back of his jammies and put a tennis ball inside. This’ll help keep him from sleeping on his back, which can lead to snoring.

Socks
Warming your feet widens blood vessels, letting your body heat move from your torso to your extremities. And spreading the heat out actually works to cool you a bit all over—good for helping you fall asleep and sleep soundly through the night.

Notebook
Starting a journal can help if you struggle with sleep. Note your activities (any exercise?), what you eat, and if you napped. At night, write down what time you go to bed. In the morning, jot down how long it took you to fall asleep, the number of times you woke up, and how rested you feel. After a week, you’ll likely see a pattern that will help you identify what’s causing you to lose sleep.

Or, if you simply have trouble clearing your mind at night, jot down what’s on your mind for a bit of release. Some women swear by ending the day with a list of five blessings.

Egg
Hunger pangs could wake you up. But a high-protein snack such as a hard-boiled egg or a little bit of cheese will satisfy your appetite and stop hunger from interrupting your sleep. Save some of your calorie budget for a small bedtime snack.

CD
Ease into sleep mode with some music. The trick: Listen to tunes that have 60 to 80 beats per minute. This range is close to your resting heartbeat and helps soothe you. A couple good songs to drift off to: “Come Away with Me” by Norah Jones and “Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat.

Good tips... although i'm not a huge fan of sleeping with socks on... i'm surprised that the article says that wearing socks to bed can help cool you since it usually makes me feel hotter.

lol, the tennis ball may stop snoring, but i don't think my hubby would be able to sleep at all with that sewed in his jammies

Dont' care for the sock tip, because it makes me hot. I would turn the air down or use a fan to block out noise and to make you cooler. Also what makes me fall asleep is reading.

The egg and cheese really do work, they make you feel full and allow you to be satified and get some sleep.  I have tried this quite a few times w/great success!!!

I keep a dark colored wash cloth over my alarm clock.  It's also good because you are not constantly looking at the time.

Hubby would never go for the tennis ball trick.  The socks on would be irritating to me too.  But the towel on the clock is interesting.  I need heavier shades on the windows too since the street lights outside are so bright.

I would never go to sleep with socks on, I would stay awake all night until i took them off, Then again I can't stand covers on my feet either at night.

I need to be able to see the clock... it actually helps me sleep better.  If I don't know what time it is, my mind tells me not to fall asleep too deeply because it might be nearly time to wake up.  I do use a white noise machine most nights. And I do sleep better with socks on. I live on a busy street with neighbors that keep odd hours.  This way I can sleep with the windows open on nice nights, listening to the ocean waves on my white noise machine and have the breeze cool my socked feet.  Sometimes I swear I can smell the ocean salt in the air even though I'm about 200 miles from a beach.  :)

You aren't actually sewing the tennis ball into the pj's just making a pocket on the back that the ball can be slipped into so that when the snorer rolls over onto their back they are 'poked' or 'nudged' into rolling back to their side. This also allows the other person to avoid waking up constantly to be the 'poker' or 'nudger'. I think it's a win-win situation if the snorer can be coaxed...maybe the tennis ball could be snuck in after they are asleep? LOL

I use the automatic shut-off on my clock radio when I have trouble falling asleep. It shuts off after 90 minutes. I can't listen to music however, it makes me want to sing along. I found a really boring talk radio station. After listening to the non-stop babbling for just a few minutes, I'm sound asleep! Wink

I should really try the journaling idea.  I have journaled before and it just makes you feel more centered altogether

Never thought that socks would help - I can't stand them!  We use a fan for white noise.

I love to do a part of or a whole puzzle.  Something like a numver puzzle or word puzzle.  It just seems to be relaxing just before i go to sleep. It also seems to tire me out too! Then I don't think of so many thaings, that I can't go to sleep.  I love the sock thing. I started doing this about 2 years ago and it always helps, winter or summer!

I don't think a tennis ball in the PJs is the answer to snoring.

I wear socks to bed to keep my feet warm, and can say that I do sleep soundly through the night. I have tried going to bed/sleep without them, but find that I can't get to sleep because my feet are cold. Once I put the socks on I fall right to sleep.

I like the egg at night idea since I seem to have a problem with eating in the middle of  the night.

I never realized that a pair of socks would help me sleep. I usually go for the cold part in the sheet.

I do sudokus before bed. I play until my mind is too tired to figure out the answers.

Regarding the alarm clock - I don't use one - instead I use my cell phone as my alarm clock. I love it - Not constantly looking at the time if I wake in the middle of the night, and I don't have to worry about the power going out!

I keep the alarm clock right behind the lamp on my nightstand so it doesn't bother me. I used to keep it on the other side of the room but now I am no longer working so I can hit the snooze button at least once!!! then get up
