The Incredible 5-Minute Bathroom Workout

The Incredible 5-Minute Bathroom Workout

The bathroom door closes behind you and you let out a sigh of relief. For a few moments, you’ve got an escape. Along with your normal routine, you can slip in some exercises. Here are five moves that can help you tone up and feel more energetic when you open that bathroom door again. Each should take about a minute.

Sink-Ups
Before brushing your teeth, stand a couple feet in front of your sink. Hold on to the sink with your hands a little wider than shoulder width apart, and back up a couple more feet. Slowly lower your chest a few inches above the sink, keeping your knees and back straight. Pause for 30 seconds, then push up. Repeat about 10 times.

Balance Brush
While brushing your teeth, stand on one leg. Then, close your eyes, which will help develop your sense of balance. After about 30 seconds, switch legs. You can also use the timing to change the area of the mouth you’re brushing.

Shower Starter
You flip on the shower and wait, wait, wait for the water to heat up. Use that time to do a set of crunches. With your back on a mat, prop your legs up on top of the toilet so they’re bent almost 90 degrees. Bring your upper body up slowly, with your upper back about 30 degrees off the floor, then hold. Slowly return to the floor. Your set’s finished when the water’s warm.

Rinse Stretch
A warm shower can help warm you up and loosen your muscles. With the water against your back, place your palms on your abdomen. Relax and inhale through your nose, allowing your belly to expand against your hands. Then as you exhale completely, pull your stomach muscles to force the air out as you say “hooooome.” Repeat two more times. This’ll help tone stomach muscles.

Towel Off
Once you finish drying your hair, roll up your towel at each end. Pull it tight between your hands in front of you, slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Move your arms and the towel above your head and rotate your arms from the shoulder down behind you as far as comfortable, keeping your elbows slightly bent and shoulders down, holding for about 30 seconds. Pull your arms back to the starting position and repeat.

What wonderful ideas!  I often do squats while brushing my teeth, too!

I don't think I would want to lay on the bathroom floor for crunches.  All other ideas are good though.

It DOES say to lay on a MAT on the bathroom floor... and you ARE going to shower afterwards... but I understand Shelly's concern about laying on the bathroom floor! ;-)

Great ideas, if I can remember them. Usually in a hurry when in the bathroom but with practice it would be okay. Really need to slow down & enjoy the moments of Peace. I guess I'll leave myself a reminder note on the mirror.

I'm with Jennifer. My bathroom is too small for the crunches! Smile

i love this idea. I don't really have enough room for crunches, but I will have to try the sink ups.

I have two boys andI'm married. I'm not doing crunches on my bathroom floor. Not even after I've just cleaned it and I'm going to hit the shower!! (I see I'm not the only one who feels this way too!) LOL =) Everything else sounds good!

One thing I've done for the past year or so is calf lifts while brushing. Simple, really. While brushing your teeth, slowly stand up on your toes, then slowly lower back down. I do this the entire time I brush.

Good ideas to think about.   I have one that I use when I'm watching T.V. in my reclyner chair.  I have had a bad neck injurye and can no longer do stomach crunches, so while I'm watching T.V. I tighten my stomach muscles for a count of 10 to 20 and then relax.  I do it all the time and it helps.  I don't keep track of reps.  just as I feel the need and how much I can tolorate.

Cool I didn't think of doing any of these in the bathroom. But guess what I will be doing starting today. LOL. Thanks for the idea.

I actually do "kick-backs" or march in place while I brush my teeth.

I have been doing stretches in the shower since high school, but I never really thought to do the other exercises.  These are some great ideas.  I usually make myself do lunges around the house.  My butt has perked up pretty nice, LOL!

Don't encourage waste!  Suggesting that we get on the floor and do crunches while 'waiting for the water to get warm' will waste a lot of water, as the water shouldn't take that long to warm up!  (I've counted; at my house it takes at most 12 seconds for the water to reach shower temperature.)  And, a better alternative to crunches (so we don't lay on a bathroom floor - ick!!!) would be to hold a plank for 30-60 seconds ..... just don't do it while running the shower water!!!!

Uh don't give women false hopes! I think that doing all this in front of the bathroom mirror/naked out of the shower will cause ego issues.
