I grew up w/this idea too.  After 50 yrs I'm still doing it.  An old sock is great for getting into tight, intricate places that often get missed.

I have used this idea for dusting/cleaning etc. for years! I also use old t-shirts for cleaning as well. Thanks!

I've done this for a few years.  Didn't know anyone else did.  They are great to use for staining furniture, cleaning silver and anytime you use a chemical that you do not want your hands to make contact with.

I take older and mismatched socks, make sure they're clean and stitch up any holes, and "recycle" them for a good cause.  I fill them with a mix of fiberfill and catnip, stitch them closed, and donate them to the local animal shelter as a comfort toy for the cats they receive.

I always cut the feet off and just use the cuffs. I like that better- my husband won't give up a sock unless there are at least two holes in the feet.  :)

We use the socks for just about anything for arts and crafts to cleaning or those are the ones the kids run around in outside so they don't mess up the ones that do match

I like that my 4 year old can put her unmatched socks on and help out too - getting all of the low to the ground areas that hurt my back to get to.

Great tip!  We also use my husbands old undershirts (after we cut them up) to do household chores.

What a great idea!  It allows you to slip into all the nooks and crannies that a regular rag may miss!!!

Old socks are the best dust cloths!  Theyare also good for washing dishes, & as general cleaning cloths!

Nice that, like me, so many are already doing this, but I'm sure it will be a new tip to someone... all old fabric items that aren't worth passing along get used for rags in my house! Smile

I grew up doing this.  It works great and really gets the full use out of your socks.  My mom also used old cotten underwear as rags to mop the floor with!  :)
