Keep Your Drains Clean!

Category: Home
To keep drains clear and fresh, pour 3/4 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup white vinegar down the drains. Let sit for 10 - 20 minutes, then follow with hot water!

Awesome tip! My mom also adds table salt to this concoction to clear the drains. It's a cheaper method that doesn't burn your eyes and senses like chemicals. Thanks for the reminder. I need to get baking soda to clean all drains this weekend :)

I have found another solution for slow drains.  On the first of every month I drop 2 or 3 denture cleaner tablets down each drain, then go about my business.  It has helped keep the drains flowing, smells nice, and is mess free on my part.

This is one of my favorite tricks to clean pipes. If you heat the vinegar to just below boiling the wait time is almost nothing. Be careful not to get to full boil, you could damage your pipes!

It is supposed to fizz, but after you let it sit for 10 minutes or so, and you run the hot water through, it will smell clean.  The fizz dissolves away the soap scum and stuff that builds up, esp. in the sink joints.  I do this regularly.  In the shower/bath it works very good too to help keep the soap buildup cleaned out.  Sureyou can use a turbo snake, and it will clean it, but the vinegar and baking soda don't just move the stuff out of the way, it moves it and cleans it and deodorizes it.   Also, if I'm doing it, and there is still a bunch of baking soda in the drain I can see when the vinegar is gone, I add another cup of vinegar and let it run through also before I run the hot water.

I tried it, seems like a good idea if you did it often, but doesn't clear a drain.

This is a healthy way to clean the sink instead of all the harsh chemicals.   Baking soda is a great cleaner.  Vinegar on its own is good window cleaner.    Put them together and they must work.

I have used this for years and it is wonderful.  I does help nuetralize the smells too. But if it is your garbage disposal that's smelling use this method and follow up with a whole lemon (turning on the garbage disposal to eat it)  It will smell fresh and clean.  Happy Wednesday everyone!!

My kitchen is straight from the '40's...and the sink is awful!! There is just the pipes that go straight down without a screen or anything!! Doing this on a daily basis (of course I have the food catchers on the plugs) has really helped...and it is environmentally safe...no harsh chemicals to be breathing in!!

Since I'm allegic to a lot chemicals used in home products, I have learned to use 2.5 acid water to just about clean and disinfect everything at home. No chemicals to eat or inhale.

Love this recipe, I have been doing this for a while..... I usually try to trap the solution in the drain to get a better effect when we have a bad clog.  Pour the solution in and quickly place a heavy object over the drain or close it with a stopper for about 10 minutes..

I'll make a date with my bathroom sink after work today.  I already have both items, so there's nothing to lose by giving it a try.

i did this but it seemed to just make a fizz and nothing else. Then i used this thing called a turbo snake daily or whenever i clean my sinks. its great it cleans the pipes and clears all obstructions.
