Reduce Meal Cost & Add Health Value!

Category: Home
Reduce the amount of meat in recipes by substituting beans instead. Black beans are great in tacos and nachos and they help reduce the cost of the meal. If using refried beans, be sure to look at the ingredients first! Most of them contain lard! Use vegetarian varieties for a healthier Mexican meal choice.

I keep a large container in the freezer section of my fridge.  Anytime I have a few veggies leftover after dinner, a small piece of meat, a bit of tomato, a bit of celery, etc, even a little brown gravy or tomato sauce - in the container it goes.  When it is full, I make a pot of soup, adding more to make a full pot.  I have saved all those "scraps" from going down the disposal and have lots of extras in my soup!

I also love beans! I have used refried beans (vegetarian) in tacos and think they taste okay. (my vegetarian daughter loves it!) I really like to make barley pilaf. I found the recipe on dlife.com. Very yummy!

Dried old fashioned rolled oats, not the flavored kinds, works well mixed in with ground beef in meatloafs.

I recently tried this in sloppy joes.  My family never even noticed.  We like using lentils in our tacos. Yummy.

Great idea. I do this alot with rice but forgot totally about black beans. With a teenage boy in the house I am always looking for cheap healthy filler foods!

Actually, I prefer black beans in my burritos. I think they taste great. We also put them in our homemade chili.
