Gifts Grads Will Remember

Gifts Grads Will Remember

Picture frame? No.

You’re Rad Grad! coffee mug? Uh uh.

Fountain pen? Definitely not.

What’s left?

For Grade-School Grads
Report-card day. When we were growing up, the local amusement park awarded five free tickets for every A, four for every B, and three for every C on your report card. These tickets were good for rides and refreshments on a special day. To reward your grad while encouraging continued good work, devise a similar system for anything he enjoys. As a default, use cash.

Mobile phone. Give her what she wants and give yourself peace of mind. Beyond just connecting the two of you 24/7, if you order tracking or “chaperone” service, you’ll be able to pinpoint her location via GPS. Kid-friendly models with parental controls minimize misuse. And adding a line to a family plan usually costs just a few dollars per month.

For High-School Grads
Event tickets. Whether it’s a concert, ball game, or show, as long as it’s not Wayne Newton or Riverdance, you really can’t go wrong. Buy two. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll invite you. But don’t expect it.

Summer job. With the economy the way it is, summer employment isn’t as plentiful as it once was. But you have connections. If the kid is trustworthy and hardworking, call in a favor. If you can match the job to his interests, you’ll be providing a career gauge along with a wage.

A safety net. This gift is best for someone other than your child—a godson, for instance, or some other kid you’ve mentored. Call him aside at the graduation party and give him your phone number. Explain that if he ever needs advice or gets in a tight spot and, for whatever reason, doesn’t want to call home, you’ll be standing by to help.

For College Grads
Business-card holder. It’s cooler than a wallet, plus it just might give him the urge to fill it. We found leather versions for about $25 or trendy bamboo models around $18.

1-month student-loan payment. Ask the grad’s parents if she has any student loans. If it’s within your budget and you were going to give a check anyway, write it for the exact amount of 1 month’s payment.

Career assistance. The Professional Association of Résumé Writers & Career Coaches (parw.com) helps grads turn diplomas into paychecks. Depending on where help is needed, set yours up with an expert to polish his résumé, hone his interviewing skills, or figure out exactly what he wants to do with himself. Peruse the website for local experts, and remember to ask for a student rate. Résumé critiques start at less than a hundred bucks and some offer free consults. Who knows? Maybe you’ll want to schedule one yourself.

I would like some ideas for my grad's friends.  We have like 8 high school grads we closely know graduating this year and would like an inexpensive but thoughtful gift for them.  Any ideas?

I think a DPS Systems would be a great gift for a kid going to college. Family members could go in together. or they're some inexpense ones that are great.

Best idea--according to my daughter that just finished her first year of college--a stocked first aid kit.  I just bought  a plastic container, a bottle of ibuprofen, acetominiphen, band aids, anti bacterial ointment , tweezers, anti itch ointment, cold medicine and anything else you would find useful.  Usually, when they sick or bleeding, they are not in the mood to run to the drug store and the cost does add up for kids on a budget.

My daughter just graduated from college and I bought her a personalized business card holder. She was thrilled.

find out the local pizza joint closest to a HS grad's new college and buy a gift card.  you could also give restaurant or grocery store gift cards if you know the places in their new college town, as most college students get tired of the cafeteria and/or don't cook very well yet.

Event tickets are tricky -especially with someone about to go off to college or trying to keep a summer job in this competitive work force.  If the person can't go..... those type of gifts are best from Mom and Dad or someone who can ensure the date is free.  My son is graduating from high school and off to college in the fall - his requests from friends and family cash and gift cards from national chains!

The best gift I got before going off to college was a small laundry basket, laundry detergent, fabric softner and $20 in quarters.  It wasn't long after I got to college that I realized just how valuable that gift really was!  (Also helpful...notes on how to do laundry).  I really like the first-aid kit idea too.  That one would have really come in handy!  :)  Also, one more suggestion for those with kids going away to college for the first time....Set them up with a magazine subscription or even regular shipments of movie tickets + food giftcards.  I had a family friend who would send me 2 movie tickets & a $5-$10 gift card to various fast food resturants every 3 months for the first year.  It was always a great treat and it kept us in touch!!

Some other practical-yet-fun ideas:High school grad- Shower tote for the dorm with the grad's favorite grooming products. (Think scented bath gels for girls or a nice razor for guys.)College grad- If the grad is moving to a new city for work or graduate school and doesn't have a car, a metro/mass-transit pass with credit could be useful. Also, depending on the graduate's living situation, many of the small appliances that you might get for a newly-wed would also be appropriate.

My daughter just graduated from college last month, and the one gift that was the most appreciated and practical was money.

If they are going to college, a backpack would be a great gift. Other ideas: phone card to call home, picture frames or photo albums for taking pictures from home with them, hotpot to make midnight nodles, popcorn maker for studybreaks, or even a new key chain for all the keys they'll be getting (mailbox, dormoom, buiilding).Other gifts I like are books like those on investing or saving money.

cash and gift cards to national places are the best. let the parents get the personalized stuff. my daughter also got a small black lockbox  to keep medicines and personal papers in to keep away from siblings and (parents) i guess. worked until siblings found the keys to it and lost them.

When my daughter's friends graduated, I researched their college colors and had a friend embroider first names for the girls and monograms for the boys on towels.  They were a hit!

I like to get bath towels in the school colors of the College they are attending, if you budget permits have them embroidered with their initals or name.

That is one of the best ideas I have heard of.  I sent my son to school with 7 towels....one for each day of the week.  He only came home with 4.  Maybe the name on it would have saved the other 3 towels.  Great idea!!!

One of my favorite ideas is an assortment of health & beauty items such as Body Wash, Shampoo, razor, shave gel, hand lotion, body lotion, ibuprofen/aspirin, cold medication, bandaids, first aid cream, a bath towel and wash cloth.

I think a small tool kit is a great gift for any grad.  How many kids have that hammer or screwdriver when they need one?  I've also given the first aid kit - with a twist.  I supply the cold meds they use.  It seems they all get sick their first year away.  Tylenol, cold medicine and possibly a gift card to Target or Walmart is very helpful.

A cellphone for a grade school graduate?  Are you kidding?  I don't care if 3/4 of 5th graders have cell phones, mine will not be thrown into that mix.

middle school kids start doing sports and it was really wonderful for them to be able to call home for the pick up BEFORE they arrived at the school after away events. Plus, with afterschool activities and no afterschool bus, the cellphone became a necessary accessory.
