Behind the scenes at a Vocalpoint Volunteer Event!

Behind the scenes at a Vocalpoint Volunteer Event!

At Vocalpoint, we come to work with the goal of making your day just a little bit brighter.  As much as we enjoy this work and as rewarding as it is, we recently decided to take a slightly different approach toward making someone’s day a little brighter.

A few weeks ago, the entire Vocalpoint team volunteered their time with a local organization that helps poor people across the globe. The really cool thing about this particular group is that they rescue products that companies, hospitals and other organizations are about to throw out.  Maybe it’s a big package of sample size toothpaste that have gone unused, a medical kit where only one of the 15 items have been taken out or older uniforms from corporations that are in good condition.  While we might be quick to throw out things like this, these items are just the kinds of things that many people in developing countries need.

When the Vocalpoint team arrived, we immediately jumped in to work!  Some of the group sorted clothes while others helped prepare items for shipment in the dock area.  Another group raked and organized the grounds outside.  At one point the whole group was doing work in an assembly line – a true example of “team-work” in action!  It was a lot of work, but we had a good time doing it.  With everyone sharing stories and laughing, the time sure passed quickly.

While we’d like to spend more of our time doing this kind of thing, it does feel good knowing that we were able to do just a little bit to help in our own small way.  Even if it just brightened one person’s day, it was worth it.

We’d love to know what types of volunteer events you’ve participated in!  Tell us what type of things you do…who knows, you might inspire someone else to help out as well!

Very cool charity work. We usually participate with our local food pantry, American hunger is what I'm most passionate about. My son has helped in a retirement home for year and he enjoyed that. We also participate in charity fundraising by doing walks, runs, silent auctions, donations etc.

Awesome!  I don't participate in any large events, but I put money aside in a personal savings account all year and then on my birthday, as a gift to myself I make donates to a couple of my favorite charities.  (Animal shelters and women's shelters.)

I mostly just give cash donations to animal, and other organizations at the end of the year. I also sposnor animals such as manatees wolves, etc.    My gynecologist died a year ago in March, and last Mothers Day I donated to his favorite (religious) charity because he was so compassionate years ago when I had a miscarriage. I plan to do this every year for Mothers Day in his memory. We donate to the food pantry when possible.

Nice!  I try to do things with my kids that incorporate a combo of fun and some type of volunteerism so they can see first hand how our small contribution of time and/or money can have a direct impact.  We've done beach clean ups so they can see first hand how their behavior can directly affect the very same ocean they swim and boogie board in. Our dog came from a rescue shelter (purposely not ordered from a breeder) and we have provided small donations to a local animal shelter. I love to bake, so I helped my daughter with her school bake sale to raise funds for an organization.  I took my kids shopping once with a local homeless shelter's wish list and my kids helped me bring in the donations to their office. Hopefully when they are older, they will find this behavior second nature.

I volunteer to deliver food to cancer patients for Cuisine for Healing  www.cuisineforhealing.orgIt is so humbling to make a difference in people's lives with healthy food as patients prepare for chemo, or perhaps have been through that treatment and need nutritional support after. It really is all about healthy food for people combating diseases.  Founder Wendy Wilkie passed away in Aug 2008 of breast cancer, and this is her dream / vision / mission that is being carried forward in the medical community. The Cuisine for Healing Outreach program is offered thru Cancer Care Services in Fort Worth.A great team there too!Kellye

I volunteer with Mishpachah Incorporated a music/drama ministry based in Mason, Ohio. We perform a musical titled “Dead Serious About Life”. The musical is written to appeal to teenagers. It is upfront it is blunt it is life! The story begins at Todd and Stephanie’s house. Mom and Dad have left for the weekend, so let the party begin! Throughout the course of the evening, you will meet the characters with their different personalities, their numerous problems and their view about their lives. The musical exposes the issues of abortion, alcohol, drugs, religion, sex and suicide issues that we don't want to talk about or face. Well, hang onto your seat, 'cause this musical cuts it wide open. It will make you laugh, cry, hurt, fear and feel but most of all "Dead Serious" will make you take a second look at life. The final message that is communicated to the audience is that suicide only creates more problems than it really solves and that there is a better way to live!  For more information visit our website at www.mish-inc.com or call our office at 513-459-7268 or our toll free number 800-459-7268.

When I get sometime between watching grandkids I will be involved with the local food pantry.  I have always wanted to volunteer sometime to the community, just never knew how or what to do.  This will be a start.  When my kids where little I helped out at their school.  It was alot of fun.

I help a group of ladies "Santa's Helpers" -- we make lap quilts, adult bibs & walker/wheelchair pockets to give to 10 or 12 nursing homes at Easter & Christmas.  We meet on Wednesdays during the school year at a local school.  On Fridays I volunteer at our Food Pantry.  I've done several "Walks" with our church, getting sponsors & raising money for missionaries.  There is such a blessing in doing for others, not for recognition. money or praise!

At my church, I am on the local mission team.  As a project that would help our downtown neighbors, we had a GREAT GIVEAWAY!  We asked the people at church to bring clothes, jewelry, electrical items( that worked), NO t.v.s, NO computers.  We took books that their kids out grew, we had kids bringing their Legos because they wanted to give something too.  We had 3 bicycles ( they went first).  [I have a stash of 4 childrens bikes and 3 skootersfor this year]  We hold it in May to help these lower income people with free things for the summer andthey can take however much they want to.  Last year was our first year and one lady came  with a SHOPPING CART!!!  It was a great hit and we had people asking if we were going to have another one next year (in 2010)We answered yes, of course. We had it in the church parking lot.   See if you can do the same thing to help your neighbors and do as the Bible says"Love one another, take care of the least and the lost" .Anne T--Green Bay

I always tried to overcome my children's buying impulses by making sure they realized the difference between "wants" and "needs" and if they persisted in requesting something I knew to be a "want", I asked them how many people in the world did NOT have what they felt they needed. Through out the year as their Christmas list grew, they had to also make a list of what they would donate from their posessions to the less fortunate or disaster victims. I now teach my grand children that they can donate time, which is sometimes more rewarding and appreciated more than giving money.

I spent last summer on a trip to the DR and helped build(by hand and hard labor) on an addition to a school for a community that lives in extreme poverty.  It was a bitter sweet moment when we finished and got to meet some of the children that the addition was going to allow to attend.  It certainly put life in perspective for me.  I spend my time volunteering at our local schools helping children to learn to read.  I also volunteer as the leader for our Daisy Girl Scout troop.  Last week we picked up trash around our school, this week its the park nearby.  We are also preparing a garden project for the same park.  Last month we sent cookies to Adopt-a-Platoon.  The girls are really enjoying themselves and don't see it as work.  I love loving on people!

I support a couple of animal-rescue groups by knitting and crocheting things for benefit craft sales and yard sales. I'm donating materials from my yarn stash, thus freeing up space for me to buy more yarn :), and the groups are selling these items to help fund Trap Neuter and Release programs and to support shelters. I can do this on my own time, while watching TV with my husband, and really enjoy these needlecrafts anyway, so it's a win-win situation.

I do anything I can as long as I pretty much like it and am good at it.  Gainesville, Florida has a lot of diversity in it so there is always something you can do.  My favorite is Art Festivals.  I can work at the Kids Section or enjoy watching the Artists' booths while they take a break.  I also have worked at the information booths.  Sine I am a Desk Manager at UF...I know a lot about such booths.  It was very rewadring because I used my talents and got no training.  Teaching children to do the same is always a load of fun.

We recently sent a SUV to Guatemala, inside we garbage bags full of clothes of all sizes, shoes of all sizes, men and women, and toys.  There is a Catholic church in the Guatemala City, that has opened an abandoned building nearby.  They have many children and elderly people that have been left on their front stairs of the church.  They don't get any help from the goverment, the members of the church give as much as they can, but it isn't enough.  The bags of clothes, shoes and toys will go to help them.  The truck is waiting to come out of iimigration in Puerto Barrios.  Hopefully the government won't take a lot.

I don't participate in a "group" volunteer effort, it's been my experience that it's too hard to get a group together at the same time on a regular basis.  My husband and I paint grafitti in our neighborhood and pick up trash on our walks.  A few of the other neighbors have noticed and commented they've always WANTED and TALKED about it.............yet did nothing.  We're doing something.  Talk is cheap.

I think both the big group efforts and the individual efforts of the other ladies is awesome!  Our family tries to be "giving" every day in some way...whether it is raising money for a charity or as simple as baking something for someone less fortunate....or even picking up trash when we're on a walk. You can make it as big or little as you want because every little bit makes a difference!
