Break Apart for Longer Freshness

Category: Home
Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store.  If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

My husband found if you keep the bananas in the GREEN bags the fruit comes in they last a long time, the skin will brown but the inside stays firm.

This is a great tip as we only like green bananas and none of us liek banana bread.. brownish ones go to compost.

We keep ours in the refridgerator. The skin turns brown but the stay perfect for about a week.

When I buy bananas, I buy them in different stages of ripeness (green, yellow-green and yellow).  Also keeping them in the plastic bag at room temperature, will make them rippen slower. Since my hubby likes his bananas more riped than I do, we never waste any and they last a couple of days longer.

I also leave them connected until they are ripe enough for me. I don't like them with any green! Once they are the 'right' shade of yellow (if there are any left), I will then seperate them for the last day or two in the house.

can't wait to tell my father this-he buys bananas 5-6 mornings a week because he likes them barely ripe.

Really? I will have to give this one a go. We always have problems with bananas going bad before we can eat them.

I have been doing this for a long time, and I agree that it works!  I started after reading something about molds that can begin growing at the stem and infect the whole bunch.  We lived in Florida for 4 years, and the warm climate made it hard to keep fresh fruit for long without it spoiling.  This tip made a real difference.

@ Melanie on 3/5  I also notice bananas ripen in the car, isnt that funny, I have discovered if you can handle having bananas without eating then for a day,  buy Green nanners at the store, they dont bruise in the car or ripen until a day or so after they are home.  I also hang my bananas from a C hook so they dont bruise up from sitting on one another...

Try worm farming...feed your old rotten bananas to your worms...they make great compost out of them, and man...that worm poo sure makes great fertilizer!

This is a GREAT tip! That's my usual complaint about bananas they go bad so fast. However, my family usually doesn't complain because that means they get to eat my homemade banana bread. Even the neighbors beg for it. This is a great tip, that I can't wait to try!

I always leave my bananas connected at the stem so they ripen, and remove them one at a time, and use them as I need them, one by one.
