Contain a Potential Mess

Category: Home
When playing with Legos/Playmobil or anything with little parts that can fall all over the place, put the pieces on a rimmed cookie sheet and have your child play with those toys on the sheet to insure a less likely disaster all over the floor!

When ever my kids play with legos or dolls (Barbies, Bratz etc...) I lay down a blanket.  That way when it comes time to clean up I pick up the blanket and dump into the container.  Very easy and fast.

I also use the plastic tops of larger tote containers...or if they are shallow, the container itself.  I have a container thats about 6" tall x 18" x24" that my son keeps his Lego parts in.  The larger ones go on the lid when he opens it & starts playing, the smaller pieces stay in the bin.  At cleanup time, he just dumps whats on the lid into the bin, closes it up and he's done!

Good idea. I wonder if children would do what mama says? I don't have to worry about that any more. I have no children living in my house

I love the idea of placing a sheet on the floor for small building toys.  Keep the area defined to a specific space.  Awesome!  Trays for the toys is a good idea too but if noise level is a factor utilize these trays for quieter activities such as paper and markers or crayons. Using trays for playdough is also a way to contain the mess.

this is a good idea but I know my son gets very upset when he builds something and it falls over and falls apart before he's ready to take it apart.  maybe a good idea for younger ones though.  I agree with the noise thing though unless you use a plastic tray instead of a metal one.

Good idea but very noisy!! I use the lid to the rubbermaid storage container we keep legos separated in it works just great. Or you can also use a lid to a file or other type of storage box!!

i've used cookie sheets for lots of projects - and i have always found they're pretty noisy to use.  anything tapping on the surface can create a lot of noise pollution...  so i limit use of cookie sheets to messy projects with soft materials that i want to clean off a non-stick surface easily.no legos, thanks.  but how about a little carpet square?  like a remnant from a carpetting supplier.  sometimes they'll finish the edges for you, for a little extra.

Instead of the cookie sheets, we used the plastic trays like you would find in the craft section, sort of like the lunch trays at school, my son, the perfectionist that he is, had one color for misc parts and then one color for what he was working on.  He turned 18 today and I have a 18 gallon tub in the basement full of them!

Good idea but wouldn't this make a lot of noise if the child builds up then lets it fall? I am very noise sensitive that's what made me think about it.
