Making Bills Less Painful

Category: Home
If you are forgetful like me it can sometimes be a pain realizing that you forgot to pay a bill. We took a large white board and wrote down what bills we pay out of what paychecks. When payday comes I simply look at the board and pay those bills!

During the winter when static electricity is a problem, I keep a fabric softener sheet handy to tame fly-away hair!  I just rub it on my comb or brush - or even lightly on my hair!  Also great to stop clinging clothes items that you are already wearing; just rub lightly with the sheet

I get paid on the 1st and 15th of the month. My rent and cable are due the first half of the month (rent the 1st and cable the 6th) and the other bills are due the 2nd half of the month so I pay the bills due the 1st half of the month when I get my check and the bills due the 2nd half of the month when I get that check. No sense waiting until the due date. I pay online and none of my bills has ever been late. They are all a few days early. The only one I write a check for is my rent.

I pay on line from my bank.  I get my monthly check that comes in the end of the month.  A week before the check comes in, I go on line, schedule all payments for all my bills with time for the bank to mail the check to them and I'm done.  I know that money is in, and the bills are paid and I know how much I have to work with.  The rest is as never was.  I lose time...like I get involved with things and think I have more time than I do.  This has really saved my bacon.Pat

i use a small calendar that i circle dates when bills are due. keep it next to pens, stamps, address labels, envelopes &  checkbook. also, write it down in check organizer that comes with all checks.  i do pay some bills automatically but, BEWARE there are people stealing money everyday from computer hackers. the latest-they take $7-15 out of YOUR bank account and hundreds of others at same time.  such a sad world we live in.  anyway, thanks for the tips!  i've been reading suze orman & dave ramsey books, too.

I use a notebook that keeps track each month what I have to pay.  I write the month at the top, the date due down the side, along with the name of the bill and how much is due.  If I pay the amount due, then I just underline it.  If I pay more, then I write how much next to it and the date paid.  I also write down any extra expenses that are not normal for the month.  It also helps save money since I pay most of my bills online...I now write down the confirmation number for the receipt instead of printing that whole page.  It's nice cause we are self-employed so our money status changes all the time and the notebook sits in front of me on my desk.  I can pull out my notebook from several years ago, pick a month and tell you exactly what our finances looked like.

We keep our bills in a pile.  When we pay one, it gets put out in another pile to be filed away for taxes. I have a box that I keep everything in until we get our taxes done.  They then get kept or thrown away after being shredded.

I use Excel for my budget.  It has the date of my pay check, the amount of the paycheck and if there is something that is to be paid out of that check, the amount of the bill is listed under the same date.  I then have formulas that calculate how much is left over that can be applied to entertainment or savings.  If a one-time expense comes through, I can look at my budget and determine the best time to pay it or how to pay it based on my budget.  It also helps me limit my spending if necessary!

Thanks for the tips as I am forever forgetting to pay at least one bill monthly (guaranteed), just with the hectic pace of life--work, family, home...I will try one of these to see what works for me.

I have ball schedules and school schedules hanging on the side of my fridge.  I also have a heavy duty clip magnet that will hold our bills.  I check the schedules so often it just made sense to hange the bills there also.

I use a whiteboard too but got tired of rewriting the bills each month. I used wipe off transparencies and wrote my regular bills on them in permanent marker. Then cut those into strips and glued them to thin magnetic sheets. Now I can put my bill makers on one side of the white board, when I schedule them to be paid, I write the amount on the piece and put it on the date it's going to come out of the bank. Now I can easily see what's coming out when and what still needs to be paid! The only thing I have to change each month is the dates on the board.

Some bills I pay electronically and some come out of my checking account automatically. I made a list of bills and when they come out and use it to keep track of all my bills. I make a new list each month and cross them off as they get paid.

Since our bills come at different times of the month, I keep a list of the bills for each month saved on my computer.  I print the list the first of the month and put it in our "bill box".  As the bills are paid, they are crossed out.  The first of the next month, I print a new one.

Now I pay almost all my bills electronically.  However, when I used checks I would write the check right when I received/opened the bill.  I would put the remittance stub and the check in the return envelope.  Instead of putting on a stamp I would write the date to mail on the envelope where the stamp would eventually go, and file them until the "mail by" date.  Then add a stamp on the envelope and drop it in the mail.
