Polish the Tub!

Category: Home
Your bath tub will be a breeze to keep clean and you eliminate soap scum if you do this: Wipe the inside of the tub with the polish that is sold for countertops following the same directions. Be sure to buff it when it's dry. The hard finish it gives the tub not only keeps it clean and resists soap scum from sticking but you can clean the tub by just rinsing with clear water...no more scouring. You will have to re-apply the polish 2-3 times a year but that's better than having to scour and deep clean the tub every week. You can also do this to the walls of the shower stall. It doesn't work so good on glass though.

Turtle wax works wonders for fiberglass shower stalls, apply the wax let it dry and buff it off with a towel. Last a couple of months.

Amber, I have had 2 back surgeries which left me disabiled. You would think my husband and kids became disabiled too! Anyway, Mr. Clean makes cleaning pads that attach to a pole. It really helps as I cannot bend.

From what I've been able to determine after doing some research on the 'net, regular car wax is "safe" to use on tubs (I've seen
Turtle Wax recommended quite a few times), so long as you don't place wax on the floor of the tub (which will make the tub very slippery). If you're looking for a product made specifically for tubs, you could try Tubwax wax or Gel Gloss, which can be found in Lowe's, Home Depot, and the like (however, all the reviews I've read indicated car wax worked just as well, if not better, and was less expensive).Hope this helps, and thanks much for the tip! I'm off to buy some car wax now! :)

Yes, I just had a spinal fusion and would love not to have to bend and scrub... but would not want to fall and re-injur my neck and back either!

The original post doesn't state what kind of tub. Mine is cast iron/porcelain. Will it work for this? Also, you're talking about two different products. One for counter tops and one for cars. Confusing.

Carrolyn, do you need to clean the tug before applying the polish...also, does this prevent hard water stains and calcium build-up also?  Thanks

We use car wax to polish our fiberglass tub/shower with several times a year.  Removes the scum buildup and makes shiny as new.  The only thing it won't remove is Georgia/Al red clay stains that get in the scratches as tub ages.  Would love to know how to get these out without damaging the fiberglass/acrylic finish.

Does this get in bathwater if you take a bath?  So many have sensitive skin and allergies that I would worry about skin irritations if it soaks off into the water.

I'm with Patty. I've always used Turtle Wax (car wax) in the shower stall, and bath tubs. My daughter was probably 10 when I started. As for the safety of car wax or counter wax have you read the ingredients in the shower cleaners you're currently using?  Apply the wax with a sponge mop from the dollar store, let dry and "buff" with a clean hand towel. It always looks amazing.  As for slippage I purposely don't wax the floor of the shower stall and just keep an extra "scrubbie" hanging on a hook. before i jump out of the shower i throw the scrubbie down and use my foot to scrub the floor of the tub. It only takes about 20 seconds and I don't have to worry about soap scum or dirt upon my next use. The manufacturers of the newer tubs and showers suggests only gel cleaners or gel cleaners with bleach to keep the original shine. I use soft scrub with bleach or even the gel cleaner with bleach from the dollar store in a pinch. If you keep up with it, you never have to scrub very hard or very long.

I THINK SHE'S SPEAKING OF THOSE POLISHES FOR GRANITE COUNTERTOPS.  I CAN'T RECALL ANY BRAND NAMES, BUT I'VE USED THEM A COUPLE TIMES FOR MY GRANITE.

Monica, Thank you so much for that suprise!  I have spent so much time and money cleaning and recleaning the tub in a house full of family and many overnight quests.  This Great Grand Mom will have much more time for fun!

I would think it the polish is made for countertops it isn't going to hurt anyone by using it in the bathtub. I mean we can sit our food on the sountertop so I am assuming its safe for us.

I'm interested in what kind of polish also.  Will anyone slip while taking a shower?    While our shower/tub is only ten years old, between the hard water and soap scum, it looks 20 years old.  I clean it regulary but nohting really works on these newer plastic tubs.  Any other help?

Here's a natural solution I found on About.com

Lemon Juice

Uses: Lemon juice is another natural substance that can be used to clean your home. Lemon juice can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Lemon is a great substance to clean and shine brass and copper. Lemon juice can be mixed with vinegar and or baking soda to make cleaning pastes. Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the cut section. Use the lemon to scrub dishes, surfaces, and stains. Mix 1 cup olive oil with ½ cup lemon juice and you have a furniture polish for your hardwood furniture. My favorite use for the fruit is to put a whole lemon peel through the garbage disposal. It freshens the drain and the kitchen. Orange peels can be used with the same results.

This was posted on about.com.  I have not tried it but I can't wait to try a natrual cleaning solution, as I have little ones, and also worry about the exposure they might get from a commercial product.

I would think buffing it well would remove any harmful ingredients if indeed there are any.  Sure is worth a try !!

I'm not so sure it would be a good idea for kids...but not a bad idea if you don't plan to actually bathe in the tub!

Not sure that polish is safe for your skin.  Too dangerous if you have little kids who use that tub!

Im not sure what kind of counter cleaner you are talking about but I am going to have to try this. My shower/tub seems like it is never really clean anymore. It takes forever to get it clean.

You can obtain the same results with regular car wax.  Just wax your fiberglass shower/tub as you would your car.  You will need to reapply 1 to 2 times a year.

I can't believe it!  I just spent an hour scrubbing and using all the elbow grease I could muster getting my tub sparkling!  I'm going to run right now and get this magic trick. I'm guessing I can find it at any hardware type store?  Brilliant!!!!

What are the ingrediants in this polish? I don't know if I would want to soak in a tub and have it absorb into my skin...

What kind of polish are you using? Do you have a specific brand? This sounds interesting. As for slippage, the rubber mats in the bottom will prevent slippage.

Doesn't this make it more slippery? I 'm a foster Mom and am required to have the non-slip stickies on the bottom of the tub.
