Pull out the Mule for Stubborn Dirt

Category: Home
I spent 2 hours trying to clean a disgusting shower floor after a tenant. What finally worked was "20 mule team borax" on a damp sponge. It is now my cleaner of choice for that type of cleaning. Easy and NO FUMES

You can also use oven cleaner.  Do Not get it on the chrome!!  Spray the entire shower/tub.   Let it sit until almost dry and just wipe off all the scum.  Works like a champ.

You can also make "flubber" with it for older children to play with.  My child has done this at school, friends houses and church.  They MUST wash their hands after playing with it though and cannot put it near their mouths.  It will make one sick if ingested.  This is from a homeschool website:

  • Put 3 T. of water into a ziploc bag.
  • Add 1 T. of white glue.
  • Add 2 heaping T. of Borax (laundry detergent). It must be Borax.*
Shape into a ball. If the mixture is too sticky, roll the ball in a little bit of Borax. Enjoy stretching this elastic substance.

I use awesome from the Dollar tree. Use it straight for tuff problems and diluted for everyday cleaning. I use it in the laundry to remove auto solvents from my husbands work clothes.

I remember making a half and half (dry) mixture of borax and grits for preserving/drying flowers.  Putting this in shoebox , with the blossoms and letting them dry for a few days.

I use Borax for just about any cleaning job that needs to be done.  I've found that Borax actually works better for most tough jobs than commercial chemical cleaners. Plus,  Borax is all natural!

I have a box of borax that has been on my shelf unopened for years! I read somewhere a great use for it, bought it and then couldn't remember (or find) the original reason I bought it. I'm going to try this tonight!

I have Borax but never thought of using it on the shower. Does it also get the mildew?? I have put straight bleach dipped with cotton balls and left it on for several hours and still can't get it out! Any ideas out there?? I've never tried Tilex mold & mildew either.

I thought 20 Mule Borax was just for laundry; I can't wait to try it for cleaning the bathroom. I can't stand the smell of bleach. Thank you so much.

So good to hear!  I have never used this eventhough my mom has suggested it. I just thought it was another one of the things that would not work to get the shower good and clean.  Glad to hear it is a good product from someone else as well, I am going to buy it tomorrow!!

Thank you so much for this tip. I live with my MIL and the shower has that texture on the shower floor. I can never get it clean no matter what I have used. Drives me crazy I was just about to completley give up on it until I read your post!

when you use it for fleas on a carpet, do you leave it on for some amount of time and vacuum it?  is this safe for children? (crawling babies)

My favorite for this type of cleaning job is Shaklee's Get Clean Scouring Paste - absolutely non-toxic and, of course, no fumes! Works on countertops, stubborn sink grit, and will not scratch anything.

20 Mule Team Borax is great for so many things.  It's a wonderful laundry additive for whitening clothes.  Another little-known use is to sprinkle it on carpet or rugs that have fleas.  I don't know how it does it, but the fleas die and the eggs don't hatch!

I like Scrubfree soap scum remover for most of the stickiness and slim left in the shower.  I typically finish off, of course after rinsing because I'm not big on toxic fumes, with Tilex Mold and Mildew.  I spray it in all the cracks and crevices where mold likes to grow.  I spray it a leave it.  This is might dynamic dou that never fails.  With tougher jobs, like the one you are discribing you may have to spray the Scrubfree and let it work for a couple minutes.  I usually spray it then just have to wipe away the soap scum.  Good luck!

Love, love, love, borax, it is great for cleaning the tub and shower walls.  No fumes, I like that.  I will try the Fast orange though, I think I would like the smell.

Great idea.  That Twenty Mule Team Borax has a multitude of uses.  I know it will get rid of roaches and other crawling pests.  Just sprinkle some in your cabinets and anywhere else you see those little critters.
