My mom always vacuumed up some whole cloves when she first used a new bag.  Now I do, too.

I love all the ideas but especially want to try the one about putting vanilla on the cotton ball and putting it into the vacuum.  Vanilla is my favorite scent.

I spray the filter on  my air return in my house with a  pump room spray, light perfume, or even febreze.  Just 2 or 3 good squirts are enough.  When company is coming, I usually use a cinnamon or apple room spray on my house air/heat  filter.  It makes the whole house smell clean and last just long enough!  I also keep a fruit jar of white vinegar filled with lemon peels and orange peels.  It takes away the vinegar smell and leaves the countertops smelling great!  Just refill once in a while with fresh lemon peels and add more vinegar each time after you use about 1/3 of the jar down. Vinegar cleans I thing, 99% just like bleach except the hair in your nose won't burn and the item you use it on won't have that awful slick feel.  Works great!!!

My go to is white vinegar. I use it when I need to clean my dishwasher or clothes washer. It really gets odors out and doesn't leave any odd smells from the vinegar itself. I will also use it to wash clothes that smell like smoke. I personally don't smoke but occasionally I am around friends and families that do and I HATE smelling like it. It's also good for the kind of smoke you get from campfires. Also I use it for cleaning windows.  I buy the big gallon jug (cheaper) and refill my little bottle I keep in the cabinet. It makes for easier access. I should also mention that I dillute the vinegar with water lol.

I used to have my own cleaning business & when clients had anlmals in doors I would use dryer sheets on their furniture couch, chairs (etc) cloth kind & it would normaly take off the hair right off! The other thing I would find helpful & to save time & $$$ was to use glass (foam) kind on most anything in the bathroom sink, shower, toilet, & so on as I said it seemed to work better & save alot of time & $$$$!!! I have a question I have an awesome reciepe I would love to submit on V/P does anyone know how I would do this it's a great one for any time but holidays it's really awesome too! Merry Christmas To all & Happy New Year

You can put a cotton ball soaked in vanilla in the canister of your vacum cleaner- it is natural and smells very fresh when you turn on the vaccum.  Also try soaking the cotton ball in essential oils.  Just dont put the oil on the filter.

I use fabric softener sheets for alot of things around the house/cars to keep the fresh smell.  I have seen a friend of mine put the dryer sheets into the furnace registers to keep his house smelling fresh whenever the heat kicks on.  Wonderful idea because his house would always smell amazing!  I have not tried this, but thinking I need to.

For the freshest smelling van around, I sprinkle the car carpets with powdered Carpet Fresh before heading to the car wash. Makes the van smell nicer than ground in goldfish crackers, lol! At the car wash, the workers do a great job of vacuuming extra good in order to pick up all the Carpet Fresh. Then I place a dryer sheet under the 2 front seats. Give them a gentle pull and stretch them out about 1/2 inch to help release the scent. Now my beat up 11 year old van smells divine!!  :o)

My husband decided to vacuum the rug on our front porch....which was a favorite hangout of our two dogs.....It smelled terrible afterward, no matter how much I cleaned it.  I was about to throw it out and buy a new one.  But I finally tried vacuuming up some Odorzout into the empty vacuum cleaner and let it remain for a couple of days before emptying it.  The ODOR'S OUT.  I LOVE this stuff!

Thanks for the tip about putting the Purex Crystals in the vacuum cleaner! I have tried several different things to get rid of the doggy odor and this works great! Even though I wash the filter, etc., I would still get a whiff every once in a while and now that is gone. I had foolishly tried the baking soda and ended up with a mess and a ruined vacuum cleaner.

Being a great grandmother living alone and on a teeny tiny budget I'm always looking for ways to conserve.  I've seen alot of good ideas here that I can use and a lot that I am already using.  Sometimes the ideas come to me later than early.  One I've realized this year was a use for those small plastic grocery bags.  I keep one hanging on the cabinet knob in my kitchen for throw aways during the day.  When it's full I tie it off and throw it in my big trash can in my wash room.  When I take these bags to the convenience site I can dump the large trash bag which is still faily clean inside and reuse it another week or two.  Sure does save on those items you have to buy and throw away----just like throwing money out of the window.  Just one of those "have to haves"

To the lady with the cat that didn't use the litter box......You can clean the carpet many times but the urine will never leave unless you replace the padding underneath the carpet area rug.....The urine is acidic and will keep creeping back up to the carpet......Our old dog used to think the carpet in the living room was the yard.  So after having our carpet cleaned and cleaned we had it professionaly done and we took his advice got new padding kept the carpet and the smells and the urine stains that would appear back were gone......

when u use vinegar on the carpet does it make the house smell like vinegar when you are done? My son has asthma so I have to be very careful on what I use. Carpet fresh has to much perfume in it. It makes it really hard for my son to breath. That is why I really like the vinegar idea. I'm going to try this next time I vaccum.

The woman that asked about getting pet odors out of her carpets in her rental:  In a spray bottle mix  1/2 of vinegar and 1/2 water. Spray on the carpets and you will get a fresh smelling carpets   It will take away the odors.  Vinegar can be used for most everything. I clean the inside grill we have without spending  much time at all it is easy to get the gunk off.  Use to spray an area you do not want a cat or dog around. Perfect for windows and for the lime around your kitchen faucet. Lots and lots more ideas. You save money by not having to purchase all the cleaners you have been buying.  Look up Uses of Vinegar. I tell everyone now.

I don't have a lot of carpet in my house so the mop is what smells for me. I usually soak it in some salt water and that does the trick. There are so many good ideas here though! I never thought about used coffee grounds absorbing odor. I will most certainly have to try that in the baby's room.

I buy bags of inexpensive pot pourri (less than $1),and pour a spoonful in the vacuum bag.  Another way to keep the house smelling fresh is to look for special fragrance sheets that fit in with your furnace's filter.  It spreads a pleasant smell throughout the house every time the furnace runs.

Any suggestions on how to get the cat smell out of carpet?  We are in a rental house that previously had cats that did not like their littler box apparently...yuck!  I can't seem to get the nasty smell out, I tried shampooing the carpet.

I spray my filters with febreze just after washing them.  While they are still wet, I spray the fabric spray right on and then wring them out and let them dry. Dries with no residue and smells fresh!

I really like the idea of the coffee grounds in the vaccum bag and can't wait to try it. I grind my coffee fresh from beans and when I make coffee my house smells great!  Another way coffee grounds can be used is after the coffee is made I empty the fresh grounds into a small bowl and put it in my refridgerator. The grounds just soak up the odors and leave it smelling great!

I put a couple drops of fragrance oil on my vacumn bag. It smells the house up and lasts about a week. Plus it is nice being about to choose different scents. Walmart sells bottles for $1.97 and they last forever. You can also be "green" and use essential oils, but they are more expensive.

Awhile back, I had purchased a bulk bag of Jamaican Me Crazy ground coffee and was portioning it into one-pot measures, which I then put into Ziploc bags and freeze.  In the process, my cat reached up and knocked over the bag, spilling some of the wonderful kahlua, caramel and vanilla ground beans.  I vaccumed it up and didn't think anything of it.  The next time I vaccumed, I had the wonderfully pleasant aroma of the coffee and no more of the vacuum bag smell.  Since then, I have placed about 1/4 cup of coffee either in the bag or I sprinkle it on the floor and vacuum it up.  Either way, it cuts odors for the entire life of the bag.

Vinegar absorbs odors and is a natural disinfectant.  I have a large glass jar that I put lemon peels in and fill it with vinegar.  The vinegar will take on the lemon scent.  I have a spray bottle that I will fill a little over half with the vinegar and the remainder with water.  I also have a spray bottle with vinegar and water and add lavendar oil extract.  The vinegar with lemon is great for cleaning the vacume and the area where the litter box is.  Be careful with the carpet powders, a light spray of vinegar water before you vacume is better.  I use a cotton ball with lavendar oil extract in the vacume and put a few drops on the filter.  The fabric softener sheet works great also.  Tape fabric softener sheets to topside of the blades of your ceiling fan, you will get a fresh scent and the dirt and dust will cling to the sheets.

I have used the carpet powders and just lately I've started putting a simple air freshner like the ones you buy for your vehicle...I put it in the cannister right  by the bag, and when you vacuum it blows the scent out.  Works very well.  Last a few weeks. You can change the scent many times over w/ all the different scents they have to offer now a days.  Good Luck.

When I buy carpet freshner powder (like arm and hammer etc) I buy a box of baking soda. I take the baking powder and mix some of the carpet freshner in a large ziplock . The baking soda helps to neutralize any odors as well as reduces the amount of carpet freshner you have to buy. It smells just as good and you save some money !!!Smile

I have a few friends who live alone and are tired of wasting food!! My friend, Chuck will make a HUGE dinner and then freeze the leftovers in ziplock containers. (The disposable microwavable kind) He takes them to work for lunch. He also taught me that I can just portion 2 slices of a lunch meat, or hotdogs or whatever and put them in ziplock baggies in the freezer. If you need to use one right away you just put the bag in warm water and it defrosts in no time!!  I don't like to do this, but he also takes mason jars with lids and freezes milk and tea. The tea I might do, but I don't like defrosted milk!

I do not use the carpet refresher on carpets it tends to leave residue behind and is hard to suck up. Also if you ever used it before and ripped up the carpets to replace it looks like the beach leaving the powder under the carpet.

Here's a tip for freshness for your car, In these trying times, it's all about saving money.  Tear out those annoying magazines colgne samples from magazines, and place the perfume sample underneath your car seat, or even in your linen closet will do the trick.  Makes your car smell really nice of your favorite colgne.  Or if you're sending a love letter to someone and want to spruce it up a bit, trying rubbing the colgne sample over the envelpope, the person receiving it is sure to be surprised.

Thanks for the idea of fabric softener. I have a stick vac that came with a Hoover I purchased years ago. Best vac I have ever owned besides my Rainbow. I really appreciate the tip about fabric softener. I will try it the next time I wash the filter. And to the lady that has a rainbow, I agree that it is the best vacuum anyone could ever have. If you can't afford a new one then look on craigslist and buy a used one. You won't regret it. No bags, nothing but exceptionally clean carpet and house period! For the lady that worked for a vacuum cleaner company...If you have a vacuum that makes the air smell like fish spoot then if you vacuum something up to help with the smell and  you eventually destroy your vacuum then at least you home would not stink. I bought a Oreck several years ago. The vacuum made the house stink to high heaven. When I took it in for my yearly checkup the attendant informed me that they had started making a charcoal lined bag to help with the smell - too little too late. The only thing that makes that vacuum remain in our posession is the fact that we paid way too much for it. And, vacuuming bounce sheets or a paper towel with some fragrance on it does help.

BTW...This tip also works great for those of us who have 'washable' a/c filters. I also throw a few fabic softener sheets in the a/c vent for a nice fresh scent.

What I do: During summer time when Lavender blooms are abudant I buy a whole bunch, in local farmers market. Mixed crushed lavenders with baking soda and lavender scented oil just a few drops.  Sprinkle on the carpets and let it stay for about 15-30 minutes.  Vaccuum as usual, the whole house just smells so good.  This is more environmentally friendly.Laughing

If you buy coffee in the cans save them after they're empty to pour your grease in. You don't have to wait for the grease to cool and you won't have clogged drains or spilled grease in your garbage can.

I sprinkle some drops of fragrance oil on a paper towel, then put it with the filter.  This aroma lasts a long time.

I have a Kenmore upright vacuum with a hepa disposable filter.  I've been noticing that after I put in a new filter, within the first or second use, the  vacuum emits a nasty doggy smell.  The filters are too expensive to change out until they are full.  I was told by the salesman not to use carpet freshners that you sprinkle on the carpet before vacuuming; it will ruin the sensors and void the warranty.  Any suggestion for my situation?

Thanks for the baking soda in the laundry advice I didn't know that. I'm gonna go get some and start using it when I wash clothes. I dump a bag of air freshener pellets in my sweeper bag and it makes it smell really great while your sweeping.

Ah the good old days.... Get a sprayer bottle. To that bottle add clear vinegar. About an hour before you want to Vacumn your floors, start with the farthest away room and lightly spray the vinegar, using a sweeping motion going back and forth and moving from room to room. After one hour (or less in most cases) the carpet is ready to vacumn and the smells 'evaporate' as the vinegar dries. Begin your Vacumning with in the room that was sprayed first. For your closets, kitchen and laundry room.. spray the corners and baseboards then let it dry. If you use a laundry shoot, baskets that hold laundry, or laundry bags.. Spray those as well. The cost is minimal and best of all IT WORKS.. Vickie

Thanks for the tip, another good idea: put one or two fabric softeners in the handle or the little flap if there is one on your plastic storage containers, out of season clothing, etc, keeps away any musty or damp smell that may occur.  I do enjoy your site!!, and A BIG THANKS  for the Pantene coupons, the Pro -X Olay cream is a good product too. I did not know you could wet any part of an electric vacuum. The baking soda sounds iffy because it has some drawbacks. I do sprinkle special powder on the carpet before I vacuum but I have to watch out for my cats because they will try-read--taste many things. Thanks for the ideas to eliminate nasty smells though.By Robin on 11/17/2009  2:04 PM

SurprisedThat's a great idea!!!  It reminds me of another one...years ago, I saw a package in the check out line at Home Depot.  It was a deodorizer thingy you put on the filter in your furnace.  And it would deodorize the whole house.  You put one in the furnace downstairs and one on the furnace upstairs and your WHOLE house smells SO GOOD!!!  And it would last a couple of months!!!  I guess you could even do the same thing with dryer sheets, too!!!  Yall have just reminded me of this.  I had a brain aneurysm 5 years ago and I had forgotten all this until I read your blog.  I LOVE THIS SITE!!!  Thank you VOCALPOINT!!!   I mean it, THANK YOU!   Kaye/Birmingham

Denisa - If you would contact your local Humane Society, they could tell you who has a "scholarship program" - financial aid groups that will help you pay to get old "Tom" fixed.  You want to do that ASAP because  once they start, they don't stop!  Clean where he's sprayed with straight vinegar (I know - but THAT smell goes away) it will neutralize the urine.  NEVER use ammonia - that's what urine is made of - animals will go back to ammonia again and again.  Go to PetSmart, etc - they have products like Nodor, that kill odor really well.  You have to nip it in the bud now, tho.  I speak from experience - I have 7 cats - all are fixed. No problems. Also, he may hate the smell of the kity litter - if it's highly perfumed, change - are you using the scooping kind?  That's the best.  Grandma Kitty

I grow a lot of lavender and dry it.  If you sprinkle some lavender flowers on the carpet and then vacuum it up it makes the room smell wonderful.  Every time you vacuum (until you empty it) you will smell lavender.

I worked for a vaccum co as a customer service rep and all of these ideas are great, except they can ruin your filter and void any warranty on your Vac and the baking soda will clog the vac. Even the powders that say they are for vacs will harm them. Good Luck

Thank you for sharing all these great tips with us. I will be sure to grab an extra box next time I am at the store. I rescued a male cat and right now I cannot afford to get him fixed and he is hitting that spraying stage. I can't stand it. The smell is horrible and I change his liter 3 times a day.

Adding a cup of baking soda to every wash seems to brightin whites (cheaper than bleach), helps wash those stinkey 10 year old jeans and those jeans your 10 year old wears......acts like a cleaning booster especially on xl loads......also sprinkle on carpet to remove pet odor, dap it on your toothbrush before toothpaste (works great at removing stain from coffee, tea and smoke)..... I could go on and on..... but im hoping you get the point....... a large bag at one of the major warehouse stores is approx. $5...... well worth it for me anyway.....

I suck up a little bit of baking soda after each use.  It helps keep that nasty "vacuum smell" away.  Especially if you have pets.
