Your nose is not just something to crinkle, wipe, thumb, scratch, blow, or occasionally poke into someone else’s business. Like a typical middle manager, it is diligent, hardworking, and capable of so much more if only given the chance. Well, here’s your opportunity.
Detect a lie: Scientists recently discovered that when a person is lying, the inside of their nose swells, causing them to touch and scratch it more often. This has been dubbed the Pinocchio Effect. So look for this telltale sign the next time your little one insists it wasn’t him who spray-painted the cat. Or, if it’s you in the hot seat, keep your hands in your pockets.
Beat stress: One of the easiest ways to get rid of the day’s frustration is with aromatherapy. If you commute by car, dab a cotton ball with a little lavender, jasmine, or chamomile oil and position it in front of one of the air vents. Or use the same herbs to scent a room or your bath.
Boost your brainpower: Sniffing lemon stimulates your hippocampus, the part of the brain in charge of concentration and thinking skills. Sipping lemon water works great during a test.
Fall asleep fast: Smelling some lavender oil before bedtime is just as effective as sleeping pills for some insomniacs.
Host a successful yard sale: Circulate while carrying a cup of steaming cider. Smells of cinnamon and cloves have been shown to entice people to spend money.
Enjoy opera: The Guggenheim Museum in New York City recently staged a ScentOpera in which the music was matched to a variety of pumped-in smells. Although Green Aria is no longer playing, the technology used to create it may one day make movies, plays, and other exhibitions into complete sensory experiences.
Look younger: Need a secret weapon in your beauty bag? Reach for a little pink-grapefruit body lotion or bath spray. Research shows that when women wear this scent, men perceive them as being approximately 6 years younger. (Imagine that!) Unfortunately, doubling or tripling the amount you wear won’t drop your age by multiples of 6.
Set the mood for romance: The same researchers also compared different smells with men’s arousal levels. Turns out it isn’t expensive perfume or coconut suntan oil that turns men on most; it’s baked cinnamon buns. Evidently, the smell evokes nostalgic memories that relax guys. Pumpkin pie, doughnuts, and black licorice also ranked high.
