Microwave Mess?

Category: Around the House
To clean a mess of a microwave, put a glass dish half full of water in and give it a good 4-6 minutes on high. This will steam all of the baked on grime and all you'll need to do is wipe it with a paper towel. EASY clean-up!!

PUT A  DAMP PAPER TOWL INSIDE MICRO WAVE USE A SPARY CLEANER INSIDE OVEN THE SET IT FOR 2 SEC. WIPE OUT CLEAN AND EASY

By JUJULIE on 1/12/2010 9:37:20 PM

Be very careful while doing this. Microwave heated water can "fly up" out of the container and can cause injury. Let the water sit for a minute and then put something in the dish or jar like a popsicle stick or wooden cooking spoon first before you take it out of the microwave. The wooden object for some reason calms the reaction.

Here is a great tip if your on a budget and cant afford all these cleaning supplies. I use cleaner with bleach get it at the Dollar store. So many uses, I spray my sponges with it to stay fresh smelling, I clean my toilets with it, counters, sinks. It is great for the shower, and it really tackles the mold and mildew issue. And you can buy the refills at the Dollar store too and just fill your bottles up when they are empty.

Oh, thank you!  I don't know why, but I dread cleaning the microwave for some reason.

Add some lemon juice to the water and the microwave smells great, too! Smile

Adding a little lemon juice to the water helps with the odor also.

ADD A LITTLE VINEGAR AS WELL

I clean my microwave about once a week; or more often depending on usage.  I use about 1 cup of water in a glass measuring cup-or any glass container, (adding fresh lemon slices to the water before nuking). heat water for about 3 minutes.  The water leaves moisture inside the microwave ( easier to wipe down) & the lemon eliminates any odors!

Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the water. Your microwave will smell good along with being clean!

I like to use fresh lemon for cooking. After I squeeze the lemon for cooking I put the lemon halves in the microwave for one minute. After that all the grime just wipes right off! No scrubbing required. After that is done I put the lemons down the garbage disposal and it freshens that, also. 3 uses for each lemon and the kitchen smells great!

Also after steaming hot cup of water in microwave use baking soda to clean no chemicals and it workks great! also great for coffee pots!

I can't remember where I heard this tip for cleaning a microwave.  You put about a cup of white vinegar in a heat safe bowl and microwave it for a minute or two.  Allow it to cool a bit, before wiping down the microwave with the warm vinegar.  It gets rid of odors too.

I do this but add lemon slices to the water.

All you need is the steam. Put a wet dish cloth in for one minute. It will be hot (duh) so be careful if you try to take it out right away, but it is already there to wipe out the microwave! I have microwaved water too long and when I took it out, it boiled over on to my hand! After some research, I found I was lucky it hadn't erupted in my face!! BE CAREFUL!!

By Rachel on 11/21/2009 7:53:51 PM

When heating water in a microwave you have to be very careful, any longer then two minutes   it could explode when you move it. There needs to be something in the water.

I wet a paper towel, add a few drops of Dawn, and put in the microwave for 45 seconds. I let it sit a minute or so to cool and steam the inside of the microwave. Then, I use the same towel to wipe the inside of the microwave out and its ALWAYS spotless!!!!

I have heard of this but squeeze half a lemon in the water to give it a fresh scent also.

This is a great idea! I also like to add a couple tsp of lemon juice to the water.  Or if you have any oranges or lemons that are about to go bad and have no other use for them, you can cut them up and put them in the water.  Gives your house a nice citrus smell.

my family refuses to use a cover on anything.  This is really the easiest way to wipe things down.  And if you forget its better because the steam stays around.

In addition to Amber's post, I have read to add some salt which will keep it from exploding when removed from the microwave.

By Lina on 11/13/2009 9:09:39 AM

I usually wet a paper towel, ball it up and microwave for 30 sec to 1min... BUT I like the sponge idea so much better!...sanitize the sponge and clean the microwave at the same time!! *slaps forehead* how come I never thought of that??Tongue out

By Emily on 11/12/2009 8:09:30 AM

Thanks. I cleaned my microwave this way and it was soo easy....

To all that use this method of cleaning...BE CAREFUL!!!  Microwaving water alone-with nothing to transfer it's energy to once the water has heated up can blow up in your face. Not like an explosion or anything like that; but an internal combustion from the base of the dish up into your face. -Check it out on SNOPES.COM, I am only posting this for the safety of all readers.

Squeeze some lemon or lime juice in the water and you'll have a lemony fresh smell.

Careful when just boiling plain water in the microwave. In some instances the water can boil up after taking it out of the microwave, causing injuries if you are too close. The spounge idea sounds great and you are getting double benefits.

By Darlene on 11/9/2009 2:35:01 PM

ADD A LITTLE LEMON JUICE OR THE REMAINS OF A SQUEEZED LEMON FOR ADDED FRESHNESS.

By TANJA on 11/7/2009 4:15:19 PM

Another great way to clean it if you don't want the hassle of filling a bowl with water and heating it...Just spray the inside down with Windex and let soak while you clean the rest of the counters everything wipes right off....and the ammonia sanitizes it too :)

Hello,I have experienced in the past heating water in a glass bowl and it has shattared when I took it out of the microwave and set it on the counter,It took a few minutes before it shattared, It was a pyrex glass bowl. It had something to do with the cool air and the hot water and glass. be careful use a coffee cup, ceramic or microwave dish. just fyi i was trying to boil water for jello. i heated it and took it out and set it down and boom it shattered.

By Wendy on 11/5/2009 7:52:51 PM

I sanitize my sponges that way too.  Also a cup of water for 60 secs in the microwave on high, remove, then immediately pop your bag of microwave popcorn, always fluffy and more kernels popped.

I put my kitchen sink sponge in the microwave to kill germs and microwave it for 60 seconds.  It steams the inside of the microwave and makes cleaning the microwave afterwards easy.  (be careful the sponge will be hot)

By Debra on 11/5/2009 5:25:14 PM

I tried water and it doesn't work as well as 1/4 c. ammonia for 30 seconds.  (This will also kill the popcorn and fish odors that may hang around.

i use this technique not only to steam the microwave walls prior to cleaning, but I also add VANILLA EXTRACT to the water and it gives the entire kitchen a sweet smell.

Here's a way to kill two birds with one stone: I disinfect my dish sponge by completely saturating it with water (so it is dripping wet), then microwave it for 2 - 4 minutes, depending on the level of sanitation I want.  I read a study in a Biological Science journal that used this technique, and microwaving a wet sponge for 4 minutes killed virtually all living organisms on the sponge.  The steam this creates also softens dried food splatters so wiping the microwave clean is a breeze!
