As I dead-head my flowers, I save them, and let them dry out on a piece of paper toweling.  Later, I open the appropriate part of the dried out flower and remove the seeds.  I keep them in a lightly closed container or a plastic bag to use for next year's garden.  This saves a lot of money and I get the garden I want with the types of flowers I liked best this year. I give some of the seeds to friends for their gardens. One year, I was impatient for spring and growing flowers, so I planted some marigold seeds in a pot for my indoor garden. What a treat!  Marigolds blooming in January!Smile

To keep the weeds down between the rows in your garden, put down several layers of newspapers.  Spray with water and top with lots of mulch or grass.  Spray with water again to keep it all in place. It will last all summer.

trying this today at the neighbors!  Sounds perfect, she is not a weed puller and i live across the street and dont like to look at the weeds.
Wow, I’m going to try that for next season.  Thanks.Laughing

We drink a lot of regular coffee at our house. Instead of throwing away the grinds, we put the grinds around our tomato, basil, parsley and mint plants. We have so many fruits and herbs, that my neighbors want to know our secret.  PS... I don't know about decaf.By Janet on 10/26/2009

I use my old coffee grounds for my Roses. It has nutrients that they use, it also keeps the ants down. Those ants bite hard.
I get an abundance of coffee grounds from my local coffee shops. They are too happy to give them away throughout the day. This really helps my garden to grow throughout the season.

I can tell you that decaf works just as well as regular coffee grounds.

question...i received a banana plant and need to bring it in for the winter.  do i just put it in my furnace room til spring and do i need to water it all winter?  light, no light?

What I have heard is fertilize it really well about 3 weeks before you have to bring it inside.  Give it as much light as possible, but cut way back on the water.

I have alot of snails.  Does anyone have anything i could use that is natural to help deal with these pests?? We are also building and have clay soil.  Any help with that too would be great. Thanks!

A saucer of beer will do the trick. I am not sure what entices the snails to the beer but they do seem to like it.  Be sure and use a saucer rather than a bowl placed at a low spot on the ground. Oh the beer can be any brand; snails don't seem to be particular.

The older I get, the harder it is to kneel and weed. I bought a fold-up low stool with pockets for my gardening tools, and it is much easier just to sit and bend down to weed or dig.

This actually works real well. I do the same thing when I garden. Though my stool isn't a fold up type.Sure beats squatting down.

I very much appreciate the tip, I will be looking to buy a stool similar to yours.  I do my best to do the bending, kneeling and weeding for the exercise but sometimes it gets to be too much and I don't get the job completely done.  Thanks!Laughing

I love my garden. I raise any vegetable you can name and then I start canning. I love popping open a jar and knowing exactly whats in it. I also have an orchard with about any fruit you can name and berry bushes galore. I'm going to try the newspaper to keep weeds down that I read on here. That may save me some work. Thanks for posting the tip!
