Fries Without the Potatoes

Fries Without the Potatoes

1 sm rutabaga (1 1/4 lb), peeled
2 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp hoisin sauce*
1 1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger
1 tsp toasted sesame oil
1/2 tsp red wine vinegar
1/4 tsp five-spice powder or ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400ºF. Line a jelly-roll pan (basically, a baking sheet with 1" sides) with foil. Coat lightly with cooking spray.

Slice rutabaga 1/2" thick. Cut into 1/2"-wide strips. In a steamer basket set over simmering water, steam rutabaga, covered, 12 minutes, or just until tender.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine honey, hoisin, ginger, oil, vinegar, and five-spice powder. Gently toss in rutabaga until evenly covered.

Place rutabaga mixture and liquid in the pan, and spread out in a single layer. Bake 30 minutes, turning over after 20 minutes, or until tender and golden.

wow. rutabaga was the one root veggie that sat alone in a bowl at every Thanksgiving, being ignored. we had it every year, for my grandmother - who insisted it made Thanksgiving real. but this recipe sounds really good! can't wait to try rutabaga and see if we could actualy LIKE it!

At first I had no idea what a rutabaga was until I looked it up on the web. Well I love yellow turnip and so does my family which includes a 3.5 yo toddler.  I looking forward to enjoying these fries with dinner tonight.. JamieLaughing

I love rutabega...only LIKE potatoes...wish someone had thought of this years ago and wish they were served in restaurants e.i., McDonalds.  Would be a better choice...a vegetable over a starch...YUMMYGloria

To Kristen...look in the vegetable section...will be a roundish shaped, turnipy looking veggie, covered in wax...Easy to prepare...even if you do not want them french-fried.  Boil and serve as you would a potato...a little salt with butter.  YUMMY.

I love rutabaga cut up and boiled as a potato with fresh carrots added at the time of boiling. After cooked, I drain and use a potato masher to mash them together and then add butter, salt and pepper. The sweetness of the carrots offset the taste of the rutabaga when cooked together. Yum! This was also on our table every Thanksgiving and the bowl was the first to empty. Good nutrition here!
