Don’t Settle for Ordinary

Don’t Settle for Ordinary

If we’re honest with ourselves, most of us don’t really want dramatic change. Sure, we may dream about it, but moving to a different part of the country, switching jobs, or spouse-cleaning a relationship is all very stressful and even scary. A better approach is to take the things we’re relatively comfortable with and tweak them a bit. Here are eight simple ways to give the routine parts of our lives a little boost.

Your shower:
When you’re having a rough week, try shower therapy. Tell off your boss, your mother, that telemarketer that keeps calling. Hold nothing back. Threaten them with your back scrubber. Throw the loofah. We guarantee that when you emerge, you’ll feel twice as clean and refreshed.

Your commute:
Tilt your car’s rearview mirror up a smidge. This forces you to sit taller in order to see traffic, which counteracts slumping and soreness. You’ll arrive everywhere feeling fresher. Or, imagine that somebody just dumped ice-cold water down your back. Your reaction to that—shoulder blades back, spine tucked—is the way you should drive all the time.

Your home: Drive to a hardware store and buy a couple of gallons of pale blue latex paint. Head home and paint the ceiling of the porch, bedroom, or wherever you spend a lot of time. It’ll feel fresh and lift your mood—researchers say that staring at the color blue helps relax you.

Your lunch hour: Find the nearest Chinese restaurant that delivers. The next time you’re having a rough day, call and order the ginger chicken with broccoli for lunch. Studies show that ginger and broccoli help relieve depression. Imagine that!

Your mind: Visit the website of your local community college and peruse its noncredit courses. Pick a subject you’ve always been interested in but never had time to pursue, then register for it.

Your relationships: Hug your pets, kids, husband, friends, stuffed animals, even yourself. The simple act of squeezing something—anything—will make you feel less squeezed and more connected.

Your sleep:
Keep a notebook by the side of your bed. Instead of collapsing into sleep, end the day by jotting down what went well that day—whether that’s 25 things, 10 things, or (some days) just 1. It’ll help you toss off the cares of the day and get ready for truly restful sleep. Hey, being happier is often as simple as being well rested.

Your whatever:
Wherever you go, carry some Bubble Wrap. Put a sheet in your purse, the glove compartment, a desk drawer at work, or even just your coat pocket. Whenever stress builds, pop a few. Instant smiles.

Find humor in everything, laugh at everything, when commuting, look for things to laugh at, turn the radio to a morning happy show, not the news, sing to yourself, sing aloud when no one is around, remember those songs from your chilhood, they are repetitious, but it sooth me to sing them, but most important of all, remember only the good times and forget and forgive.

Get a dog or a cat-they give you a reason to get up every day and they love you unconditionally. You can get upset with them and yell at them, and they will come back in 2 minutes to way their taleor give you sloppy kisses to say I love you.  Our dog brings much laughter into our lives.

I'm surprised that no one suggested taking a walk!  My neighbors, my husband and I have started walking on the weekends for 30-45 minutes. I like walking to music to keep that rhythm going!Cool It really takes your mind off things, not to mention getting out in the fresh air.  Hopefully, we'll all lose some weight and shape up at the same time!

Why not pray, listen to or sing hymns. They are not dreary and help me to connect with my Heavenly Father. I can even ask for direction for the next few moments or hours or for the day.

Paying your bills: I love office supplies and like to have colorful files, unique pens, even special address labels. Somehow those little touches can make even a routine job more fun.

I always try to pray before I get out of bed.  I'm physically challenged, so when I can walk fairly well without too much pain, to the bathroom, I give the Lord a Hoot of Praise!  It does help to start the day out with prayer, because after all, He already hasInnocent your day arranged.  He knows just whats going to happen.  He'll be there with you while you go thru the day.  Halleluiah!

I love these ideas, and I try to do a good deed each day and take a little me time.  Whenever I am feeling down, I try to smile because it always makes me feel better.

I am fond of the idea of jotting down the good things that happened that day.  When 4AM rolls around and you have to get up to pee then worries or stresses keep you up you can think back to what you wrote.  Thats nice

Even if it is just 5 minutes of "me" time that goes a long way.  Things like a body wash in in indulgent scent, a flavored coffee, hugging my dog - these all get me through the day.

We put a whiteboard in front of our computer desk and created a permanent grid  (my husband spent hours with electrical tape but a permanent marker and a ruler works just the same - I won't tell him that). It had a space to write each bill, when it's due, whether it's auto-pay, online pay, or mailed. We left spaces for each month of the year so we can check them off as we pay them. Then we put all of our bills and their due dates on it with dry-erase markers. It's a great feeling when you look up there and see all the check marks - especially when you mark "paid off."

If I have just a few minutes to myself (like 5 or 10), I like to nibble at a chocolate bar and let it slowly melt in my mouth as I read a short magazine article or newspaper column.  Or else I'll grab the chocolate bar as I listen to a few old nostalgic songs from the '80s or '90s.  Both reading and music are great, but eating chocolate while indulging in my favorite activities makes me feel like I'm really treating myself.

A nice cup of tea and five to ten minutes to yourself is great, as is a nice, hot bath once a week. But there are plenty of other small ways. A nice pot of miniature roses or some lucky bamboo is a nice way to add a touch of greenery to the house, especially during drab winter.
