Your OTC Miracle Drug

Your OTC Miracle Drug

Just as scientists have discovered new benefits from aspirin, they’re also finding surprising ways that another common drug—caffeine—can give us a boost in the health department. Here’s a taste.

Exercise easier.
New research suggests that caffeine inhibits spinal nerves that transmit pain messages to the brain. Now, in plain English: You can beat the muscle burn you typically feel during workouts with a cup or two of coffee beforehand. (Just check with your doctor if you have any complicating health concerns—like high blood pressure.)

Relieve minor aches and pains. Even when you’re not exercising, caffeine can act as a mild pain-reliever. That’s why it’s listed as an ingredient in many OTC pain-relief medications.

Head off a headache.
Taking caffeine and ibuprofen relieves headaches more effectively than taking ibuprofen alone. The amount of caffeine in two cups of coffee seems to do the trick.

Rev your metabolism.
Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, which helps you burn calories even when you’re not doing much of anything active.

Soothe a hangover. If you grab for a cup of coffee after a night of a little too much wine, your instinct is right. Caffeine constricts blood vessels, which can help relieve that headache and morning-after feeling.

Recharge your day
. To beat an energy dip in the afternoon, try sipping 2 ounces of coffee every hour from 10 AM until 2 PM. Even that small amount will get you through.

Stop an asthma attack.
If you’re caught without your medication, have some espresso. The caffeine in a shot or two may open narrowed bronchial tubes.

Save your memory.
The research is preliminary, but there’s some evidence that coffee may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Older women who drank three cups or more per day were 70% less likely to have forgetfulness than those who drank a cup or less.

But before you go straight to the coffeemaker to chug, keep in mind that caffeine is a drug. Too much will make your life feel even more stressful. It will also disrupt sleep, which can bring on a world of health problems. So keep caffeine to a level you can handle without any nasty side effects. And if specialty coffees are your addiction, you should know that the typical fancy latte contains 210 calories and 11 grams of fat. Drink that every day instead of plain, and you’ll be getting an extra 73,000 calories (or the equivalent of 21 pounds) per year!

I wish that some of these articles would include the caffeine information as it pertains to soda & not just coffee...some uf us aren't coffee drinkers, but love our soda!! (much to the chagrin of my neurologist, who has been trying to get me to stop drinking it for the sake of my migraines.)

Alyssa, I just saw this on another blog a few days ago.  I realized I could be drinking a lot more tea without any guilt:D  It's a visualization of the ratio of caffeine to calories.

Interesting! Confirms everything is good for some reason yet not so good for another.

I have to agree that coffee or cafine is a great help to me. Again too much is also not a good thing, but I could not start my day without a few cups!Laughing Anything that has been around for this long without any sevire side affects is good in my book. Natural is always better.

I don't think I could function without caffeine.  I think Alyssa is right because I do not drink coffee, I drink tea and soda.Laughing

Every morning on my way to work, I must stop by Sonic for a large vanilla Dr. Pepper. If I don't get this, watch out world! I simply can't function. Not to mention the grouch factor.

I have just one cup of coffee in the morning, but at times I need a quick pick-me-up and go for an iced coffee during the day.  I had no clue coffee was a go thing now.  In the past coffee was the worst beverage you could drink.By Nilda

When I feel a migraine coming on, I take an Excedrin Migraine.  It works wonders, and now I know why...it is loaded with caffeine!  It also seems to curb my hunger.

Coffee or Excedrin relieves your terrible headache because you're addicted to it! Your headache is a withdrawal symptom. If you go without caffeine for a couple of days--and endure the withdrawal--you will not have these terrible headaches.

I keep caffeine pills on hand - they work just like the coffee - are great  for preventing headaches.

Caffeine can be found all by itself on the web.  Just sprinkle it in anything you do like.  God put everything we need right on this planet, all we have to do is finde it and use it properly.  This is only one reason not to destroy the Rain Forrests before we find all the good stuff in there.

niowara@yaho...

I drank so much coffee when I worked in a factory (20 years old), that I ended up in the hospital for 10 days with an ulserated colon.  So it's not always good for some people. I'm 58 now and still long for a good cup when I smell it brewing. I could use diabetic sugars but it deffinately gives me a headache and ruins the taste of coffee. I also love Pepsi and Dr. Pepper but can't handle artificial sugars!!! I take a Bayer Back and Body before I go to bed and sleep well. I think we become addicted to things too easily but it's up to the individual. Ones good for one can be bad for another.  S. Means,Boonville,Mo.

I have always known that the caffiene helps your body absorb certain pain medications. Since I have to take medications daily for pain you can bet I take them with a good cup of coffee.  I also asked my doctor if the amount of caffiene I consumed daily was hurting me and he told me that I could drink as much coffee as I wanted! Thank-you!!Laughing
