When Sweets Are Smart

When Sweets Are Smart

Isn’t it great when you can have it all? Like when your husband fixes the dinner and does the dishes. Or when your kids call to check in and return home on time. Here’s one that’s easy to actually make a reality: Eat sweet foods without a ton of calories and actually get health benefits on top of it. To make the plan work…

Focus on Smart Sweeteners
It’s true: Some sweeteners are actually good for you. Research has found that molasses, brown sugar, maple syrup, and honey all have fairly high levels of antioxidants—which help fight certain diseases. So it’s just a matter of training your sweet tooth to make wise choices.

Start with a smart swap in your morning coffee or tea. Instead of adding sugar or artificial sweeteners, drip in some honey. Besides being high in those antioxidants, honey may help lower “bad” cholesterol, boost memory, and reduce anxiety.

Look for products that contain these better sweeteners, too—just check the ingredients list. One of the hardest places to find good sweeteners might be the cereal aisle. But we found a great new cereal that gets its sweet taste from honey and natural fruit concentrate. It’s called Kashi® Honey Sunshine®. And even though it’s all-natural, it doesn’t taste the way you’d expect an all-natural cereal to taste! (Trust us, you’ll be sneaking it by the handful.)

Bring On the Fruit
If your sweet tooth craves fruity, chewy treats like gum drops or gummy bears, carry around a small bag of dried fruit as a healthy option. Six pieces of dried mango have no fat but give you a couple grams of fiber and protein—which will help you feel full until your next meal.

Fruit (fresh, frozen, or dried) can fulfill that need for sweet while supplying lots of vitamins and fiber. In fact, some research shows that people who are “sweet tooths” already eat more fruit than people whose cravings are for salty foods. So make that sweet tooth a blessing in disguise and keep your kitchen stocked with lots of fruit choices.

Spice It Up
Got cloves and cinnamon in your spice rack? Move them to the front. They can give foods a sweeter taste without tons of calories. And one study found that these spices were pretty high in antioxidants. Try a sprinkle of cinnamon in your coffee. And for something sweet and gooey, make a packet of instant, plain oatmeal, then top it with 1 tablespoon of chopped pecans, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of maple syrup. (Yum!)

Add a Touch of Chocolate

Another food that’s high in those disease-fighting antioxidants is chocolate. But don’t just grab a candy bar at the checkout counter. Dark chocolate, rich in cocoa, is better. If you’re looking for a healthy way to enjoy dark chocolate, melt it and drip it over a couple medium-sized strawberries.

Can’t believe we found a natural cereal that is also satisfyingly sweet? Find out more about Honey Sunshine (and why your entire family will love it).

Dark chocolate is delicious as well as good for you, but there is a limit to how much you should consume.  I could eat it all day.  I've also heard that bittersweet chocolate is even better for you, but some people don't like the taste.

I just take a small bite of the bitterest chocolate bar I can find, the darkest, and let it melt in my mouth. I do this about once a day and it is good!

love the sweets!  Although, adding honey to my coffee.... that is one I will have to taste, thinking the combination with work is a 'no go'.

I love things sweet and use sugar free maple syrup as a secret ingredient.  It adds a lot of flavor to dishes, but without all the calories.

I've always claimed to be a sugar addict. Then I learned it's because my parents were alcoholics. I watched them handle their emotions by pouring empty calories down their throat. So, I do the same with sugary foods. I've since fought me "disease" with sugar free drinks and a handfull of semi-sweet milk chocolate morsels for baking.

It's nice to know about sweet alternatives.  I will incorporate them in my sweets-lifestyle. I love sweets but its not good for the body.

I have learned that dieting is not the answer - moderation is. Instead of giving up sweets, just learning portion control is. I now have a little piece of Dark chocolate and my sweet tooth is satisfied, If I don't keep a lot of sweets in  the house but always have SOMETHING at least I won't be too tempted. Of course, it is easier now that my sons are grown.

Actually, I CAN get wonderful dark chocolate at the checkout counter.  My local grocery store has  reasonably high cocoa count bars right up front to tempt me.  Much better than laffy taffy.

I love sweets. I am trying to be smarter about my choices...dark instead of milk chocolate...a lot more fresh fruits. I really like cinnamon so that sounds like an easy thing to add in to things like oatmeal.

Honey, cinnamon, fruit, and chocolate - it sounds like dessert to me.  Now I will indulge a little and say I'm doing it for my health!!

I LOVE sweets and find that they are usually what derail my weight loss plans.  I also love fruits, but hadn't really connected the two.  This gives me some good ideas for the future!

I've devoted this whole year to living healthier and it's really paying off. Part of being healthier is being conscious of good things you can put INTO your diet as well as taking bad things you can take out. This article is very timely and appreciated.

I love sweets. I've been using a touch of maple in my baked beans, french toast, and homemake cookies.  It's been my little special ingredient for years.

I didn't like dark chocolate as a rule, until I started watching my calories and food choices. I opted for a dark chocolate nibble and was surprised in how I have begun to enjoy it better than the not so healthy sister Milk Chocolate.
