In some cases it doesn’t really take much more than a finger to ease worry, save money, and keep everyone in the family healthy. So limber up those index fingers, ladies. It’s time to learn how to perform some amazingly simple diagnostic tests.
Identify a headache. There are nearly as many types of headaches as there are people who give you them. To determine if yours is a sinus-related headache (so you can target treatment), lightly tap your face a few times with your finger. Tap above each eyebrow, above the bridge of the nose, and just below each cheekbone. This is where your sinuses are located. If you feel a sharp pain when you tap, then they’re the source of it. Treat with antihistamines or decongestants or, in severe cases, with doctor-prescribed antibiotics.
Assess sun damage. To quickly tell if you need to apply more sunscreen (or retreat beneath a beach umbrella), use your finger to poke the area that’s had the most exposure. If it blanches or whitens, that’s a sign the blood vessels have dilated and the skin has been damaged.
Gauge the health of your heart. The slower your heart beats when you’re at rest, the stronger it is, and the longer it’ll probably last. To take your resting pulse, sit quietly for a few minutes and relax. Then place one or two fingers lightly on the inside of the opposite wrist, just below the thumb. Once you detect a pulse, count the number of beats in 15 seconds and multiply the total by 4. This is your resting heart rate in beats per minute (bpm). Healthy people usually have readings between 60 and 80 bpm, although well-trained athletes often dip into the 40s and even 30s. If yours is abnormally high, see a doctor. To lower yours, do regular aerobic exercise.
Estimate his fertility. Ask your guy if you can take a look at his hand (or, to avoid arousing suspicion, examine it while he’s sleeping). Compare the length of his index finger with the length of his ring finger. In one study conducted at an infertility clinic, researchers found that men whose ring fingers were longer than their index fingers had higher testosterone levels and, as a result, might be more fertile.
