When to Break the Beauty “Rules”

When to Break the Beauty “Rules”

Whether you got them from your mom, your grandmother, your friends, magazines, or a combination of all of the above, we tend to have certain ideas in our head about what’s right and what’s wrong when it comes to beauty. Do you faithfully stick to these “rules”?

Always Wear Deodorant
Break it…if you’re having a mammogram.
Skip deodorant until after the screening. The aluminum in deodorant causes shadows on mammogram film and can botch the results. So try to endure one morning feeling a little less fresh. Super-self-conscious? You might check with your doctor to see whether an all-natural (aluminum-free) kind of deodorant might be okay for the day. Schedule the test first thing in the morning. Or check to see whether a digital test is available (no film).

Save Blue Eye Shadow for Halloween
Break it…if you know to apply it subtly.
The ’80s gave blue shadow a bad name. But we’ve seen some gorgeous blues lately. Pros say it’s all in the technique: If you have paler skin, pick a sheer shadow; darker skin types can go a bit deeper. Whatever you choose, stick with one blue—mixing shades gets tacky. Brush on shadow at the lash line, then fade color slightly upward toward the crease. Keep the rest of your makeup soft. (Now’s not the time to try a new fuchsia lipstick.)

Don’t Use Conditioner If You Have Oily Hair
Break it…every time you shampoo.
In most cases, even if it’s oily near your scalp, the ends of your hair are dry. So it’s smart to give them some moisture and protection from the hair dryer, curling iron, straight iron, whatever tools you might use. Here’s the trick: If your hair’s super-oily, apply conditioner to your hair only at the ends. That’ll give you healthy hair without making it slick where the oil tends to build up.

Foundation Is for Your Whole Face
Break it…if you can get away with spot treatment.
Do you really need allover foundation? Try blending your foundation in an upward direction with a cosmetic sponge just over any red, splotchy, or otherwise problem areas. This looks way more natural—and could even save you money. If you still need a little more coverage, try a light bronzer all over and foundation just in spots where you need it most.

Gloss Is Just for the Lips
Break it…if you want to try a new trend.
Envy that dewy look you see on models right now? It’s actually supereasy to get. Blend your usual eye shadow or blush with a tiny amount of petroleum jelly on your finger and apply. Or, even simpler, just play around with your favorite lip gloss.

Have you tried something that was totally different and outrageous for you, but looked great? What rules do you keep or break? Be daring, share!

I like the tip about lip gloss. I have recently moved from the east coast to Wyoming where the air is dry, dry, and really dry. It's taken a toll on my lips and skin. I keep lip gloss in my car and when I get in I automatically put it on. Next time I get in the car I'm going to put a little bit on my cheeks also and see how that looks. Thanks for the great tip!

Always great to get some simple "beauty" tips! The simpler, the better and most useful for busy moms.

When I notice my eye brows are getting a little unruley and I'm in a hurry, I spray a little hair spray on my finger and run it along my eye brows. It helps keep them from sticking out and looking weird.

If you can't wear deoderant you can use baking soda and it will keep the odor away. Ask your doctor or dermatologist they suggest the use to people who can't wear deoderant due to skin problems or constantly having a reoccurance of boils under the arm.

I have very oily hair and the no conditional except the ends is so true.  If I put it all over, I'm doomed to look like I slept with  my head in a bucket of oil within 24 hours.

Best to use hair conditioner on the ends only if you have oily hair.  I have dry chemical hair I do put all over my head....on the top of my hair I only apply a tiny amount.....actually I use what is left from the ends to put on the top of my hair.

My little make-up trick, when using the new blues, is to add white liner (my fav is MAC) to he inside corner of my eyes. This adds just enough brightness to keep it "summer light"

You have to be very careful when you use baking soda for deorant.  Combining with one body chemicals will sometimes turn the baking soda red and it will come off on your clothes.  I would try it just to be safe.Smile

One of my favorite money saving tips is to use up cleanser that I'm not too crazy about by mixing a bit of baking soda with it in my hand. It makes a nice facial smoothing scrub.

If you have really dry lips, hands and feet. Moisturize with petroleum at nights.  Feet -combine with a little water put on a pair of white socks twice a week in the cold weather and use a pumice stone 3 times a week to keep feet soft. For hands add a little petroleum at nights and massage into hands and elbows nightly...not too much to be greasy. You'll feel te difference in 1 week.                                                                         Andres

I travel alittle and it gets your skin very unruly!  I either used to always breakout like crazy (and no, I am definitely not a teenager!) or my skin, lips and hands would get so dry!  A friend suggested Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream to me and the Satin Lips and I LOVE it!  I never have any more problems!  You can not buy in a store, but if you go to Marykay.com, they can refer you to a consultant near you!  You have also got to try their mineral powders!  Hope it helps.

For wonderfully soft skin mix baby oil with epson salts and use as a scrub all over.  You'll be amazed how soft your skin will feel.

For a great body scrub I use baby oil and epsom salts mixed together.  I makes my skin feel so soft.  It is very inexpensive and works great.

I too have oily hair and I have found if I wash my hair with DAWN dish detergent {without the hand moisturizeronce} once a week I have no oily hair, better hair days and less chemical build up. Only dawn works I have tried them all. When I was a teenager I had to use it 3 times a week.

I have two kids so I don't have time to fuss with a lot of makeup in the morning. I apply a light bronzer and then a little blush to my cheeks and to my eye lids too. It helps brighten my face a little and I don't have to mess with a lot of steps. I always use eye liner and mascara though! Forget about the 5 minute face I'm done in two.

Okay...don't know where the info not to wear fuschia lipstick came from.  This is NEW AND HOT! So is red.  Wear it.  However the tip for the blue eyeshadow...yep sounds good to me.  If the 80's gave it a bad name, what happened to the girls of the 70's who "Tussy Blue" was their fav.  Oh my...just leave it alone at any case...I wear navy in the creases, but not light blue.

I use the petroleum jelly on the feet at night and wear a pair of socks.  They are noticeably softer in the morning when I wake up.

I'll have to try the visine under puffy eyes.  I find that concealer under the eyes, slightly lighter than foundation gives me a younger look.Innocent
