6 pounds down, 100 to go!
So here I am, I can’t believe it’s been a month since I started this journey to a new me. It hasn’t been easy and I haven’t been very good – but there’s progress!
First off – let me say thank you to the Vocalpoint community. Your words of encouragement were very helpful as I was fighting off cravings for a full calorie soda!
I wonder how Stacey M is doing – she said she’d race me to 200! How about Marilyn who is 65 years young – how is she doing on her plan to lose 60 pounds? And Gwendolyn K who’s losing weight to be more active with her 4 year old daughter? How are you ladies doing?!
But back to me (my favorite topic – right?) – I stepped on the scale today and weighed in at 250 even! So I’ve lost 6 pounds in a month. And hey – if I lose 5-6 pounds a month – I’ll be at my goal in about a year and a half – I can live with that! It’s not overnight – but it’s progress.
It has NOT been easy. First of all – work brings in birthday treats which are hard to resist! I said no a couple of times – which I’m pretty proud of – and I now refer to the treats as “Satan’s Pie” – it makes it a little less desirable! Then there’s my husband who offered me some of his fast food Chicken Pot Pie. I said no, then raced home to look up the nutritional info – 40 GRAMS OF FAT! Another version of Satan’s pie!
So there were times when I was able to resist the temptations...and then other times – not so much. I went home (Cedar Rapids, Iowa – w00t!) and enjoyed a ginormous pork tenderloin as well as a couple of breakfasts that were less than healthy. But when I got back, I tried to get back on the wagon and get back to better eating.
I joined SparkPeople.com [www.sparkpeople.com] to track my weight, exercise (or lack thereof) and food. It really helps and I do notice that I eat better when I have to write it down later. I get into a bargaining situation with myself and say – well – I’m having something bad for dinner – so I better eat that diet meal for lunch at least!
My nutritionist recommended that I take walks at lunch and play with the dog more. That worked for about a week. Then I got back into “I’m too busy to walk” mode at work...I gotta buck this trend and get back out before it’s too cold to walk outside!
I have also made the switch from regular soda to diet soda. I tried to go without soda and switch to water but couldn’t do it. I love the carbonation! So I figure – while the fake sweeteners aren’t the best – a diet soda is less calories than the regular, and I’m trying to only drink one per day.
Eating out and dinners are probably the two biggest areas of improvement for me. With eating out – we just do it too much. We’re busy (even with no kids) and just never feel like we have TIME to cook – so we eat out. My mantra with that has been – I don’t have to pick the BEST thing on the menu, just make sure I don’t pick the WORST! I’ve been pretty successful with this methodology when I eat out.
As far as dinners go – I made some crockpot freezer meals that I can just set out the night before and then pop in the crockpot the next morning. So far, I don’t love the ones I’ve made, but I’ll keep experimenting with this because I think it could be a good tool.
Lastly I want to share my goals with you – they’re on my SparkPeople page – I stole this idea from another SP member. I’m so excited I was able to mark a date on my first goal!
