Set the year's doctor appointments!

Set the year's doctor appointments!

This time of year, many people are resolving to take better care of themselves by losing weight, giving up a bad habit, or eating more healthfully. Take your health resolutions to the next level by scheduling all of your yearly medical visits in advance. Here’s a how-to guide for the whole family!

The guidelines below are for healthy, typical patients. People with certain risk factors or health concerns may need to see their doctors more frequently.

Primary Care Physician: Adults should see their PCP annually to have their height, weight, and blood pressure checked, and to discuss any lifestyle risk factors, concerns, and age or health-specific testing that may need to be scheduled (such as cholesterol screenings, colonoscopies, mammograms, etc.). Children under 18 should also see their pediatrician or PCP yearly for a basic health evaluation, vaccination updates, and so that parents can discuss any questions or concerns with the doctor.

Dentist: Adults and children alike should see their dentists every six months for cleanings and check-ups (and the free toothbrush!).

Optometrist: Healthy adults and children should see their optometrist every two years, beginning at six months of age. Those who wear glasses or contacts or who have other vision problems may need to visit their optometrist or ophthalmologist annually.

Dermatologist: Adults should see a dermatologist annually to be screened for skin damage or signs of skin cancer, and to discuss any skincare concerns or issues. Children may not need to see a dermatologist until puberty, or even later unless there is a concern. This is a great topic to bring up with your child’s pediatrician at that annual visit!

Gynecologist: Ladies, you know about this one. Woman should see their gynecologist for the first time when they become sexually active or beginning at age 18, and should go back at least every three years. Many doctors prefer to see their patients annually, and frequency can vary if there are health concerns or if a pregnancy is a factor. Gynecological care is different for every woman, so talk to your doc about what’s best for you. But don’t go more than three years without a visit!

A few tips: Before you see any doctor, go over your insurance coverage to make sure you know what’s covered and how often (like dental x-rays). Also make sure your doc of choice is in your coverage network. You don’t want to be surprised if a hefty bill arrives unexpectedly!

Prepare a list of questions and topics to discuss with your doctor, and don’t be afraid to have it handy. If the doctor seems impatient or unwilling to address your concerns to your satisfaction, he or she may not be the right doctor for you. Most of them time, though, this shouldn’t be a problem.

If scheduling an appointment six months to a year in advance is too tricky with your lifestyle, take advantage of the postcard mailings that many doctor’s offices send out. They usually come a month to a few weeks before you’re due for a check-up, so it’s the perfect reminder to call and schedule your appointment.

If your doctor’s office doesn’t schedule as far in advance as the date that you need your appointment, use the calendar feature in your email to send you a reminder right to your inbox to call again closer to the date.

How do you keep your family’s healthcare on track?

I have a book right next to my computer so when I get home from the Dr's the appointment cards go on my desk right next to my computer and date book

If you are pregnant, it's wise to know the schedule for moms...usually begin 2 week appointments at 28 weeks and once a week at about 36 weeks.  You can preschedule those and not have to worry about it.  You also find out if your provider is out of town one particular week.  That means you can be aware if you go into labor if you will have an on call provider.

I need to get a colonoscopy this year.  When I see my doctor early this spring  he is going to give me a referral to get one.  I get a yearly mammogram and just got one 2 months ago.  I go to a hospital clinic so we cant call until a month before we want to be seen.  After we call for an appt, they send a letter a reminder letter about 5 or 6 days before our appointment, or callus  about two days before the appt.

Great reminders -- I usually just go ahead and set up the appointments when I leave the doctor's office so that I don't forgot to schedule.  It's remembering that I've scheduled them that gets me! Ha!

My appts are already made!!  You can always reschedule if necessary, but it seems that If I don't set it up on my way out of the dr's office I tend to keep putting it off another month and another month.... until another year has passed.  I feels great to be ahead of the game.

I just made several dr. appointments for my little ones today. It IS so hard to keep appts. straight & remember to schedule. I LIVE by my calendar...this has inspired me to make more appts. for myself & my husband as well!

This is such a great way to help people get more organized in the day to day. I am hooked on a paper calendar and write everything down as far in advance as I am aware of it. That habit has saved my bacon many times, at work and home.

Thanks for the reminders! I also try to make appts. as I leave my doctors, or my kids doctors office and I put it right into my phone (calendat) instead of taking a reminder card. I set the alarm on my phone to remind me 2 days before the appt. But I do have to get my first mammogram this year and I haven't made that appt. yet, so thanks again!

I see numerous dr.'s, so I schedule before I leave every appt. It's easier to change them once they are made. Plus, I'm less likely to forget any this way. I also put a reminder in my calander on my phone. That way I get that reminder as well. I've found that most of my dr.'s DO NOT send reminder cards or make phone calls to remind anyone. I also put the appt. cards on the refrig. At the end of each month I go through the cards to be sure I have them all in my phone. it's alot of work, but it saves me on missed appt charges. Lol. Hope this helps those of you that have numerous monthly appts. :)

One should see an ophthalmologist annually in order to rule out certain eye problems or receive attention for those that are occuring or may occur with certain diseases.

I find that some doctors don't schedule very far in advance so I need to keep calling to check if their calendar is ready so I can get the time that I want.

With my 3 children I alway have their well child check up the week of their birthday. I schedule their dental check ups on the same day in January and June of every year. I have all of our eye appointments scheduled every September this way  with a new school year, I will know early in the year if the kids  need glasses or not. I do mine and my husbands yearly check up in January. I use the same months every year and it really helps with organization. It really helps when you are asked about "when was the last time question you will know". I always have October marked for flu shots for the family. I get my family's monthly medication filled at one time each month, I keep a small list in the front of my calendar that I update when there is a change, Since most Insurance's don't have the savings for mail order anymore I do everyones locally. As a nurse I canot stress the importantance of check-ups and preventive check-ups. Check-up's do save lifes. Love life and Love your health.

I use outlook calender for reminders. I used to set wellness checks for the kids on their birthdays but work got the better part of that and also didnt like the idea of kids missing school. So i try and schedule most of thier appointments in the summer or over Christmas break.....

I have an ongoing chronic condition - Fibromyalgia  and liver diaease - so I see a doctor at least once a month. My yearly is Monday :( I wish I dental coverage because I haven't seen a dentist in years and need to. I have to write my appts on the calendar or I'll forget!
