How Nature Can Help You Shine

How Nature Can Help You Shine

Ever see the movie Medicine Man? It features Sean Connery playing the role of a scientist who stumbles upon a flower extract in the Amazon rain forest that cures cancer. As he attempts to isolate and protect it, he battles greedy pharmaceutical companies and loggers. It’s all pretty exciting stuff and Connery is his usual hunky self, but the film imparts a valuable lesson as well: The antidotes for many of our woes already exist in nature; it’s just a matter of using science to locate and coax out their full powers. Here are some natural secret weapons you can use to clear a path through life’s jungle.

Epicatechin for a strong heart and mind. Studies show that this natural substance helps dilate blood vessels and improve circulation, which benefits cardiac and mental health. In fact, epicatechin contains significantly more disease-fighting antioxidants than red wine or even green tea. The great news is that the best source is cocoa, so you have one more excuse to eat chocolate. Researchers pinpointed that dark chocolate (or hot chocolate) with at least 70% cocoa has the most epicatechin.

Pyrethrum for bug control. One of the reasons chrysanthemums are so hardy is because their flowers contain a natural insecticide. French soldiers actually used to grind them up and rub the powder on their bodies to fight lice. Today science uses solvents to extract the active compound, but it’s still an effective, environmentally friendly alternative for debugging organic gardens and keeping mosquitoes and other pests (not counting nosy neighbors) from ruining summer parties. As spring arrives, look for products in a 3 to 6% solution at home stores and nurseries.

Fiber for weight loss. Just because fiber is indigestible doesn’t mean it’s not good for you. Researchers at Tufts University found people who ate an additional 14 grams of fiber daily—roughly double what they’d been eating—took in 10% fewer calories. They weren’t dieting. They weren’t actively trying to lose weight. The extra fiber just filled them up, so they ate less. Try increasing your fiber intake and see if you don’t enjoy the same benefits.

Cassia for beautiful hair. The cassia bush has flourished in India and China for centuries, where it’s been used in ancient medicine to purify and strengthen the body in a variety of ways. More recently, cassia inspired Pantene beauty scientists to create a breakthrough line of hair-care products called Pantene Nature Fusion.  Aware of cassia’s strengthening properties and noticing that a certain element within the cassia seed was similar to synthetic hair care ingredients, Pantene’s beauty scientists set about transforming cassia into a powerful shampoo ingredient.  By applying science to the cassia extract, the cassia essence helps form a conditioning system within the shampoo which provides a protective shield for hair.  In fact, Pantene Nature Fusion shampoo can give your hair 10X the strength against damage in just 14 days.*  Click here to learn more.

* Strength against damage; shampoo vs. non-conditioning shampoo.

I agree with the fiber suggestion. The more fiber i take in, the healthy weight. When i cut back on fiber, my weight slowly creeps up!

I am all for more natural products.  Unfortunately, in our current economy, my budget doesn't often allow me to buy the organic/natural products.  It's a shame that when you are trying to be healthier in what you eat and what you use in your home, that those products always cost so much more than the synthetics/man-made products.

The BEST thing I've found for looking (and feeling) your best is drinking pleanty of water.  I know it's boring, but it works.

I have gone back to looking for natural things for whatever I need, fiber is important, fruits, veg, leguemes, soy products, vegan mostly, all help my IBS, however I am having a flare up, but am treating my symptoms with bananas, brown rice, and rest. Why when less is done to the food or whatever does it costs so much more?  I no longer eat in restaurants, or any processed food.  But My life could be better, I don't smoke tobacco, or drink alcohol, or soda, or prescriptions.  I endure lot's of name calling by my fatter, sicker associates, but it is a small price to pay for knowing I have improved my health, and will not only live longer than some of those but I will have a better quality life.

I agree with you 100 percent!  That is why I battle over the same 10 pounds on and off 2 to 3 times a year.

Yes, I find I struggle with the same thing. I am trying to start doing my own gardening for a cheaper natural alternative.

I agree 100%! We have a water cooler & drink bottled water day in & day out. Other than milk every few days & a coke for dinner, water is all we drink. I always get compliments on my youthful looking skin, although I'm 50-ish. It's all the water holding the moisture in. Water is also the only thing that actually quenches your thirst...

I have natural curly hair - love the extra moisture - my curls fall into place without filling heavy or weighted down by conditioner.  Love my Patene!!

SmileI have to add...I love natural products so much but I, too, have found them to be more expensive than other competitive products that aren't natural but I just can't afford them.  I'm grateful that people are starting to try to invent more nature friendly products, I just wish they would make them more affordable.  Thank you for letting me give my opinion.

I totally agree. I go to the local Farmer's Market to get what they call "no spray" veggies and fruit, but I paid $1 for each bulb of garlic vs my grocery chain store had garlic from China 3 bulbs for $1. Something fundamentally wrong when that product is transported half way round the world and costs 1/3 the price!!

I have never heard of Pyrethrum, but I like the idea of Pyrethrum for bug control.  If I plant some near my garden, I wonder if that would help keep the pests out?

You should also try using a big wide tooth comb instead of a brush. Brushers do tend to break your hair therefore causing a lot of damage. If you must use a brush I have read that a boar brittle brush is the best to use. Hope this helps you...Marie

I totally agree with you...the prices on these things that are to be better for us cost an outrageous price therefore hindering some of us to purchase them to help ourselves...wish we could share our feelings about this issue with someone where it might do us good but don't know exactly where to go to voice opinion....does anyone know??Thank you Vocalpoint for the opportunity to voice our opinions on here also with each other...feels great to read that others feel the same as I.

My family and I have used Pyrethrum for years to fight against insects around the farm. The great thing about it is that you can use it safetly on any animal no matter how old the animal is. I have used it on everything from the horses and goats to our ferrets and kittens. It is also safe for children and has a plesant scent. You will save so much money using this than using traditional bug sprays and its easy to find.
