How to Avoid Embarrassing Beauty Moments

How to Avoid Embarrassing Beauty Moments

No one’s perfect. But a few easy tips and tricks will help you look polished and avoid seeing yourself as a “Don’t” in a magazine.

I’ve got “winter prickle.” It’s easy to forget to shave your legs in the winter, but keeping track of your razor days is smart. It lets you be ready to slip on a skirt whenever. It helps you feel ready to cuddle on the couch after the kids go to bed or head out with friends. And it helps you avoid embarrassment should you partner up for sit-ups at the gym. Just pick the days of the week when you have the most time in the morning, and stick to shaving on them each week. Remember that lower temperatures mean drier skin, so be sure to use shaving cream or gel and a razor with a moisture strip (try Venus Embrace). And don’t forget to lotion up after stepping out of the shower.

I’m wearing deodorant…on my shirt. Rushing around and getting dressed for work can easily result in a deodorant mishap (think white streaks across your little black blouse). To prevent these marks, apply deodorant a few minutes prior to getting dressed. Do your hair and makeup while you let your underarms dry. To be extrasafe, look for deodorant that dries clear.

“You’ve got a little something in your teeth.” Make a point of checking your teeth after each meal with a quick trip to the bathroom. Carry a small pack of dental floss just in case, and you’ll start a habit that will make your dentist smile. If you don’t have floss, you can fold a firm paper towel and use the edge to help dislodge food gently.

Sudden stains strike. If you bobble a coffee in the car, drop a mustard glob at work, or topple a red wine glass at a restaurant, even the simplest spill can turn into a clothes-ruining moment. That’s why carrying a stain-removing stick is essential. New designs fit into your purse or pocket like a pen would, so there’s no excuse not to bring it with you everywhere. If you don’t have a stain remover, stick with cool water—hot will set the stain.

Gorgeous lip color—but not on my coffee mug. Superbright pouts are in (Ă  la Mad Men and Old Hollywood), but letting the color cling to drinking glasses is not. Lick your lips discreetly before taking a sip. And to make your color smudge resistant in general, blot your lips with a tissue, reapply, and blot again. This helps absorb the oil in the lipstick while leaving the pigment and matte waxes.

My shoes look great—but smell bad. Stinky shoe can plague even the most hygienic of people—your feet sweat and certain shoe materials just seem to hold odor. The easiest way to prevent shoe stink is to alternate the pairs you wear daily. To remove stink from already-smelly shoes, stick a sheet of fabric softener inside the shoes overnight or use a sprinkling of baking soda.

Panty Hose in the Freezer?
A runner in panty hose is another problem you might face on the go. You can carry clear nail polish or hair spray to help stop the run once it’s there. But many women swear by storing panty hose in a plastic bag in the freezer. The untested theory: The cold keeps the nylon from degrading.

Instead of wet paper towel look for self flossed picks or Soft Piks by Butler GUM for quick tooth care.  Also the new Wisp disposable brush and paste are available to be used with or without water.  Lastly, sugar free breath mints with Xylitol are good for teeth and breath.

For smelly shoes I just put in some Tinactin powder. Even though it's for athletes foot it does the job.

Uhhh - the stain removing stick doesn't seem that helpful when you have a really big spill like coffee or wine - I guess it depends on how much you spill...but I've never heard of pantyhose in the freezer although not as applicable for a stay-at=home mom who never wears panty hose. And I think stinky shoes can be alleviated somewhat if you buy really good quality leather shoes - the cheap ones tend to smell more. And setting your lipstick with some powder over the tissue works well too.

Clear nail polish for hosiery is a life saver. I've used it a few times. Great suggestions!

I always had an extra pair of hose in my desk drawer at work because sometimes the snag was too big for nail polish.

Sorry, didn't find this very helpful.  Avoid winter prickle by remembering to shave?  Avoid deodorant marks by getting clear deodorant?  Clear nail polish on panyhose - been doing that for 30 years.

One trick that works well should you already have a deodorant mark and want it to go away... take the fabric in both hands on either side of the deodorant mark and rub the fabric against itself vigorously right where the mark is, This usually erases the deodorant mark, or at least makes it a lot less visible.Laughing

Thanks for the great tips - how about putting a dab of deoderant on after your clothes are on very carefully!

Thanks for the tips but I have one request regarding the lipstick on the coffee cup? How do you keep lipstick from sticking to your teeth?

I appreciated the tips from the users and the company - kittly litter sounds like a great idea for the shoes.  One question I have relating to deodorant - what happens when you get a pit stain from your deodorant and can't get it out.  I think I have tried every home remedy and have still failed.

I have a better deodorant trick:  put on your deodorant after you put on your blouse.  Absolutely no marks from pulling on a shirt this way.  If you get deodorant stains on the hem of a shirt - those white marks, try a damp washcloth to wipe them off.  As for getting pit stains out, time to trash that shirt (they won't come out, not with vinegar, Shout or prayer!)  I toss all my stained or ruined clothes that I can't donate under the sink and use them one final time to clean around the toilet!  This way I can guiltlessly throw it away knowing it had a full and useful life of service.

Do you know the trick of applying lipstick then putting your finger into your mouth, puckering up and slowly removing your finger?  Removes excess lipstick.  Weird but works, and now you have lipstick all over your finger!

This is what I do for not getting lipstick on my teeth and it works great!  Apply lip stick and then take your index finger and stick it in your mouth and close your lips around it as you slowly pull your finger out.  Just make sure you dont do this in front of collegues or any other person who might get the wrong impression that you are trying to send other types of signals.  It sounds wierd, but I learned it from a friend and it works great!  ANother trick to try  - whenI was a dancer as a teenager, for recitals we would put on lip stick and then a very thin coating of vaseline to our teeth so we could smile and not have our lips stick to our teeth . I say do the finger trick it works well and I never have a problem when i do that!

I have resorted to dying my clothes once they get pit stains.  RIT dye works great, is inexpensive, and also makes "color-remover" so if the article I wish to dye isn't white, I can get most of its original color out before I switch it to a new one, if I decide to switch its original color.  Only problem is white shirts must be dyed a new color, this color-remover will not remove pit stains either.  Other than that- I have no idea how to get pit stains out.  Good luck!

Stinky shoes result from bacteria absorbed by your shoe's fabric/insole.  Spray the inside of your shoes with Lysol disinfecting spray right when you take them off, when you get up for work in the morning they should be dry and stink free!

I've heard that if you rub a little Vaseline on your teeth it prevents the lipstick from transferring to them...

Smelly shoes? I cut a panty liner to fit the insole of shoes.  Prevents slipping around and absorbs dampness.  Great!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best way to remove deodorant from your blouse is to rub it with a pair of nylons (or knee highs).  Works like a charm.
