What’s in Your Vase?

What’s in Your Vase?

So maybe you’ve packed away the bathing suits, capris, beach chairs…But keep out those vases. Even when they’re not filled with flowers, they can be an easy way to dress up a room or a pretty way to get organized (hey, who couldn’t use more organizing tools?). Here are some ideas for where you can display them throughout your house.

Kitchen
Dried beans: Layer multicolored ones, or alternate with dried rice.
Pastas: Use dry spaghetti or fettuccine in tall vases, wheels and shells in squat styles. Mix in whole-wheat, spinach, and beet varieties for color.
Citrus: Combine small lemons, key limes, and even clementines.
Wood spoons: Vases make elegant, practical dispensers for kitchen tools.

Bathroom
Seashells: Buy a few bags of assorted miniatures or gather your own during your next beach vacation.
Bath salts and soaps: A colorful assortment.
Water and a floating candle: Simple yet soothing; color the water to match your decor. In a guest bathroom, float a little sailboat.
Tile chips: Create a mosaic in glass.

Bedroom
Mini tree branch: Find one with an interesting shape, then “plant” it in some sand or stone; hang earrings and other jewelry.
Feathers: Hey, you never know when these will come in handy!
Coins: Instead of tossing loose change on the bureau, create a money vase.
Potpourri: The next best thing to flowers.
Buttons: Ask Grandma; she’s probably sitting on a ton.

Family room
Candy: Keep the ever-hungry horde happy with a colorful mix of jelly beans, gumballs, M&M’s, or whatever is on sale. Licorice sticks work well in tall vases.
Grapes: A more healthful alternative.
Dog treats: Don’t forget the other family members; the mini bone-shaped ones are particularly decorative.
Marbles: Fun and full of color.
Fish/turtles: You don’t need an expensive aquarium if you can remember to clean and feed regularly.

Entryway
Holiday theme: Welcome guests with some red-foil kisses for Valentine’s Day, green glass chips for St. Paddy’s, or mini pastel eggs for Easter.
Decorative balls: Especially elegant in a large vase.
Long sticks: Gather your own, then spray paint; can be dramatic in floor vases. Or put in a few forsythia branches and force an early-spring bloom.

Sunroom/Breakfast nook
Birdseed: Toss a handful out the door every morning before you have your coffee, and you’ll be assured of company.
Coffee beans: Don’t toss them if they go stale.

Garage/Workshop
Nuts and bolts: Pretty can also be practical; organize screws, nuts, nails, and washers into different vases—or mix them all together.

So next time he says “Not another vase!” when you come home with a garage sale find, let him know that he’s off the hook for filling it with flowers (for now). You’ve got other ideas in mind.

Great ideas!  I also store craft items in clear vases, so I can see what I have when I am doing a project.

If I implement some of these ideas, my husband might feel better about the many unused vases we have in the house. Thanks!

Glass vases are beautiful all by themselves.  I display them in curio cabinets.

I use a large mouth vase fill it with any kind of dry beans.   Layer diffferent ones if you would like.  Use it as a knife block.  Better than the wooden kind.  You can just dump out the beans and put fresh ones in when needed.  My husband had the habit of using the knife, wipe it off on a towel and then putting it in the wooden block.  Yuck! Germs every time I put it back even after I wash it.  No problem now just change the beans.  lol

My husband likes to eat uncooked macaroni. I have bought some different kinds of that for him. He never gets bored with it, but I don't know how he eats it uncooked. I found some that looks like  little orange wagon wheels. He really likes that!....... so much for filling a vse with it!

for xmas I put some tiny white glass balls in an apogathe jar and set a snowman on top. In another I put med red balls and yet another I put medium gold and white balls. Put them together for a cute and cheap display for xmas. Now that Easter is upon us,  i used the same jars-one with a bunny on green grass, another with small bunnies in dresses and the other has colored plastic easter eggs. I will keep them up for 4th of july, halloween, thanksgiving and again for xmas.

My problem is that I don't have a lot of horizontal display space in my home so this just ends up being clutter. Maybe I will install some floating shelves...

You can probably spray paint stale coffee beans with a nice metallic paint so it looks pretty, same things with the sticks!

I will have to use some of these ideas.  Some of my vases I just leave empty too, especially the fancy ones. They look good on my window sill just as is!

I fold stars and cranes and put them in vases or old soda pop bottles with their original caps. When I put them in vases, I put some scented oils and the room smells nice and looks great at the same time!

Very interesting ideas. Haven’t even thought about using vases for other things.. now they’re just collecting dust between uses. Thanks! Smile

I really love all these ideas.  I think I will try them all (but not all at once). I've always loved clear vases!

have a large vase that I put a white pillar candle in. As the holidays and seasons change I add different glass ornaments that I buy from Lillian Vernon (Easter eggs, shamrocks, etc). It's a fun and easy way to decorate.

to add color to a dreary room during winter, colored marbles and rocks, any thing with bright primary colors in any room.  Group 3 or 4 with different objects together.  You could fill them with crayons and if all else fails, fill with water to different heights and get out the food coloring.  Put them where the sun shines on them.

I do use one to throw change into, use another mini one for toothpicks....however I thought the vases in the bathroom could be dangerous since they are glass, and the potential for them braking on the ceramic is very high (especially with children & water).
